Oven Pilot Light Question

This is odd.

Here I thought my oven wasn't working because I couldn't light the pilot light. I had a Maytag oven another TT so I thought I knew how to light it. Finally, I made a trip in to the dealer to get a couple warranty issues worked on - including the oven. Come to find out, one needs to push the knob in (for about 10 secs) after turning it to pilot light position and then light it.

So that works fine but it has a zapping sound to it. I had it lit for about 15 minutes and the zapping sound never went away. Is this a feature or a problem?

Thanks for your input.
-Dick

Hello Dick,

Yes the way they light is like the old, old propane ovens. Keep the knob pushed until the thermo-coupler is hot enough to keep the propane running. And yes get used to the Zapping sound, it doesn't go away. If we are watching TV and the noise starts to bug us we just turn the pilot light off.

As soon as I saw this thread I wondered if you had a 3400!! We have that model and I HATE to lite this oven!! I think that you would need to be about 2 ft. tall and very tiny to get into the spot you need to be in. I have hubby hold the knob in and I get down on my knees and lite it, if we are lucky it lites the first try. Don't get me wrong we LOVE or 3400, but wish they could come up with a better way to do this.

Been standing on my head since 1984, when our first used TT came with one, you had to do the pilot light the same way then, next unit, ditto, this unit, ditto.

Probably that is what we get when there is only one oven manufacturer. Why change, they know if we want an oven, we buy it from them?? Better make that one oven parts manufuturer. Remember a couple of years ago, when they ran out of ovens, cause they could not get one part, only one company to make them?? talk about a 'nitch' in your product market?? gesshhh.

one of the finer 'nuances' of rving (did I spell that right? HA HA MORNING!!!)

My oven lights the same way, but does not make a zapping sound. My other ovens worked the same way but never made a sound. Thank goodness!!

Have no idea hot to lite the pilot in our 3 year old Monty but than again we rarely eat in and when we do it's the grill or cold sandwiches or cereal. The oven is another one of them overlooked storage places. Great place to store rolls of paper towels.

Oh Carol and ROGERSUEMEGAN. How I love your humor.

Thanks for the replies and we will probably only have the pilot lit only when we need it. We have been using the "Complete Meal" button in the Apollo instead and we love it.

Thanks again.

We rarely use the oven and I have no idea if it zaps. There is something to be said for having a hearing loss!

Dick,

Am not sure about the noise you mention, I usually turn mine on, and start the oven right up, use it, and shut it off, including the pilot light. It is amazing how much propane those things use up. I would rather heat water or air with that propane vs using it for a pilot light. (Just my way, my comfort zone again.)

How loud is this zapping noise??? Annoying or "blow me out of the rig" loud??? Does it over power the telie when you are watching it??

Carol
I have on occassion noticed a roar when the flame really kicks in, sounds like a jet engine in the kitchen! Not sure that is kosher, as I don't remember that happening before on the prior TT unit ovens. Probably some adjustment???

Crandallbradley: It sounds like an igniter. That is the best I can explain it. Maybe it is new to the new model ovens? I didn't hear it with my 2004 Prowler.

No zapping noise with mine either. I leave the pilot light on when we're using the rig, it's easier than trying to re-light it. Stacy

No zapping sound on ours, either. Nor on the previous one. This one is even more awkward to light than in our 3295RK, it seems. I agree there should be an electronic ignition on these things.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

I agree the pilot is a bear to light. We have had 3 5ers - all have been the same. Although I have to admit after being at this for many, many years, we did not know about leaving the pilot on until someone (I think it was Helen) at the Minden rally told us. I felt really stupid.

Absolutely hate to light the oven. You have to be a contornist to be able to hold in the button and hold the flame up to the thermo couple. Usually takes us three or four times. Easier to use the half time oven.
