Hey all you dieselholics, how high the mileage 'til I don't buy? Retiring at the end of the month and have budget as of now for older diesel. Thanks for your help! D

A well maintained diesel engine can go 300,000 miles or more before the injectors need looking at. There are a lot of other parts on the truck than need to be checked out. Have a good mechanic give it a through inspection. Having the oil analized would be a good idea also.

This Diesel truck only has 31K miles on it but I have driven diesel busses with over 250K miles on them all brands, GM, International, Cummins.

Only problem I see with high mileage on the modern diesel engines is the lack of warranty. They are expensive to repair. Don't even know what the maximum mileage is for one to be able to purchase a extended manufacturers warranty, but you might check on that.

I’ve heard mostly bad about the 6.0. I have had some problems but you can see my signature; it speaks for itself! I change oil regularly and use the suggested oil that Ford told me to use.

like richfaa says 300,000 miles is average. the new 2011 cheys say 300.000 easily if mantained properly thats at 300,000 miles of heavy towing all of the 300.000 miles and i,m not talking about just using to go get groceries.

I wish I had used this one for the full amount of mileage that’s on it but I can’t take credit for it. I purchased it with just over 300k on it and it appears to be mainly road miles and I suspect it was towing most of the time. It had a goose neck hitch on it when I bought it. With 300k on it and at that time it was only about 4 years old so I doubt they had spent very much time inside of a repair shop. It was sold to me as a high mileage vehicle.
On the warrantee issue I had a company that was going to give me a warrantee for 100k miles. I bought it and then backed out. They did give me my money back because it was within the time frame they allotted for a refund. It may have been a good thing, who knows.

ddettorre,
I guess I misunderstood what you were asking. I thought you were asking about how much you'd have to pay for a gallon of diesel before the payback would be worth the extra cost. If that is what you were asking then that would be a very personal thing. It is whatever it is worth to you. For us it will probably be about $5 or more.
A couple of years ago while on a trip into Canada we paid just over $5. Thankfully as soon as we got home the price started coming down! Of course! Anyway I suspect somewhere around that price would the thing that would slow our travels down or even stop them. Most likely we'd simply travel only in our local area. The CA Central Coast is about 150 miles from where we live. I suspect we'd spend a lot of time over there.
Good luck to us all.

Fuel prices of $5.00 a gal would for sure extend our stays at one location but fuel prices will only go higher. Anything much more would have our 5er parked by the river for the summer months, which is less than 1 mile.
The life of a Diesel engine depends on so many things. But the average RVer will almost never run over 500,000 miles and very few will see 300,000. But I'm sure there will be exceptions. The biggest problem is having to repair the rest of the Truck. Just due to wear and tear, and in many cases simple abuse. If properly maintained the Diesel will out last the rest of the Truck. The last over the road Truck I drove, I put a 194,000 mile on the clock in 15 months but the Truck was serviced each 20,000 miles by certified tech at the terminal. The maintenance on a Diesel is the critical factor. More than likely the Truck we have now will be our last Truck, it has 59,000 miles on the Clock. The Mercedes Diesel is designed to run 500,000 to 800,000 miles. We went 9,000 mile this past year and have been on the road 7 1/2 months. GBY...

We have averaged 15K miles a year on this 08 6.4L and near all of it is towing this 3400 anchor. It would take forever to put 300K miles on the motor. The drive train has the 100K warranty and we have never had a tow vehicle that came close to 100K miles. The price of oil is plunging again it is at 68.60 down 1.27 as of now and down over 15.00 a bbl in the last 3 weeks.
5.00 per gal will and did slow us down.Diesel has dropped to 2.899 here and gas to 2.599 (speedway) The economic collapse in Europe having a huge effect on oil prices.

Our diesel F-250 is 15 years old and is only barely broken in at 184,000 miles. I don't think diesels can be "too old."

I would try to get one with some factory warranty left on the power train. The power train is most likely the most expensive kind of repair. After driving it some, you may be able to see if there is anything obviously wrong with the power train.
Miles and time, both become issues at some point. The rest of the truck will fall apart before the engine/tranny dies.
Having a good mechanic look at it before you buy is always a good idea.

Yep, with the LB7 Duramax injectors or the PS 6.0 cab off repairs, you can drop 5 grand in a minute.
