Another Broken Bed hinge

This past weekend the
Hinges came unscrewed on bed frame

After removing our mattress from the bed frame, I saw the problem with the bed frames hinge "failing" that some of you have posted. I found some of the most pathetic construction.

There are two hinges to the setup. Each hinge has only 2 screws to each side on my unit. One side of each hinge is screwed into what appears to be soft pine ? . I can nearly push the screw in with my thumb. I added another set of hinges (all I had at camp) and repositioned the original hinges and was able to place longer screws on the hinge side next to the trailer wall side.

I then added some 1"x1" boards under the plywood supporting the mattress. That plywood was bending (without the mattress on it) when I closed the storage.

I never had a problem with the bed hinges and as far as the plywood sagging? I weigh over 300# and Lorraine weighs, well lets just say she's a tad over average, and the plywood under our mattress has never sagged.

All I ever did on our other rig was to replace the hinges with a piano type hinge just because I had some laying around. I am rather large as well and so is the little woman. We have not had an issue either, but heavn knows there is always a first.

Our plywood has supporting boards, that is what makes it so hard to store things under there. Where ever the boards come down then you can't make that area as tall as the other areas. Drives me nuts. Maybe the weight issue isn't as important as the activity issue! LOL (Just had to say that)

We have no hinges on our brand new 3400 execpt the ones I put there to gain acess to the under the , under the bed. Have we been un hinged...

Sue, you said what I was thinking.

Sue, you might be able to correct your problem with a heavier piece of plywood? A little work and a little expense might give you the needed storage.

I had to cut ours down in size, 'cause the KING-size was too big for our Queen airbed. Nice to have that extra ~4 inches on each side, especially on the closet side.

No other problems in the bedroom so far, will keep the forum posted!

Buddy I had the same problem just a few weeks ago. I can feel your pain when that plywood unleases from the hinge nad he gas struts start shoving that matress out of place and into the air. I used a piano hinge and I have had no problems since. I would suggest anyone who has the ol two style hinges to replace them as soon as possible.

Only complaint we have about the plywood under our bed, is the way they bevelled the corners (at the bottom of the bed).
With the mattress hanging over the end a little and the corners bevelled so much, there is no place to tuck the top sheet
and comforter in between. (yes guys, there are some of us men that help make beds) Never know when you need a few extra brownie points.

How does you bed raise up then? There has to be something at the head of the bed that lets it raise when you pull it up.

Apparently some of these Montana units are constructed differently based on the replies here.
I have known for some time that I bought the "black bean" trailer.

I keep the tool box open.

never seen what goes on up there..there must be a hinge up there somewhere..guess I will have to check that out as as a preventative measure. It seems solid enough..We did have the mattress off when we replaced it and did not notice any hinges.but there has to be one????These preventative measures drive me nuts..everytime someone mentions a problem or possible problem I run out and check it out and in @ 50& of the cases I do have to take preventative measures. I sure don't want these things to happen when we are long timing and we will not have all the resources to repair items that we do here at home.Most of these issues are what I categorize as "little things" but we do not want t them to turn into "big things"

(Not to hijack this thread, just to give a hint on your complaint.)

When we make the bed, we fold under sheets and blankets on that diagonal cut/area/place FIRST. Then tuck in the bottom, then the sides, if necessary.

Might help that we have an oversized blanket on that bed, we had it, so rather than spend $$ we used it. It might be a king?? Not sure any more.
