Ram 5th wheel hitch removal

I have a 2018 Ram crew cab dually. The dealer where I bought my Montana installed the curt 20,000 pound hitch. I have the puck system.

This is my first 5th wheel, my first 5th wheel hitch, and my first dually, and my first experience with the puck system.

I need a trailer to store my golf cart and tools while I'm down in florida.

They allow this on my lot instead of a shed. I've looked at 16x7 trailers that I can pick up in Georgia for $3500. But I've seen a few gooseneck stock trailers here at home I can buy for under a grand. I could close it in with a few sheets of metal, and build a ramp, and then give them a paint job.

So finally I get to my question. How hard is it and how long does it take to remove a curt 20K hitch from the bed of a ram with the puck system?

Pull the pins and turn the lever at all 4 corners and pull the hitch out of the holes.

I have a slider and it is heavey.

Easier to just change tube on gooseneck to king pin from 2 5/16 ball. Lots of them change ,or while your welding in new steel or ramp cut ball hitch off and install king pin. More to life than lifting 5th wheels in and out of truck. I have hoist in shop to remove mine. Trying to age upright rather than hunched over crippled.

I have the same sliding hitch. Very heavy. I have a hook welded to the top of the bucket on my tractor so I wrap a strap around the hitch and lift it out with my tractor. Couldn't do it any other way, well if I was 20 yrs younger I could muscle it out.

We have the larger Curt but it is exactly like yours. I REALLY like that Ram offers a hitch from the factory! The hitch is very reliable and easy to operate BUT it is heavy. I turn 60 this month and while the wife and I together can manage to get the hitch out of the truck it is a strain. When at home in Arkansas I have a Kubota tractor so it isn't an issue but in NM where we are currently full timing due to work it is an issue.

There are a lot of good hitches out there. The Curt is certainly a better grade hitch despite its weight or perhaps because of it? You will find most folks on here will recommend one of 3-4 brands. You could pick any one of them and still be happy with it.

I agree with some of the other posters on here. Change the gooseneck to a king pin and then you won't have to take that hitch out so often!!

While I don't do it , I know some friends that use the 5er to remove their hitch. They leave it connected to their coach, if they are going to be in 1 location for a longer period of time. I don't know what, if any issues this may cause to the coach or the hitch.

If I need my whole truck bed , I leave the hitch hooked to the 5er pull the pins and raise the front landing legs open the tail gate and drive out from under it.

Easy Peasy

I have a GMC 3500 with puck system and Curt hitch. It's a two person job because of the weight of the hitch, but shouldn't take you more than a couple minutes to remove or install the hitch. It's a slick setup. Too slick for my liking, so I added a cheap lock to one pin just to deter a semi-honest thief if they're looking for an easy heist.

If you have a couple of sturdy sawhorses and a couple 2x6s or sheet of thick plywood, you can slide it out of the truck bed instead of having to hoist it out with manpower. Makes it even easier.

5 minutes and you are ready to set it out of your bed. I have B&W and I take the head off to reduce weight as I take it in and out by myself. Makes it easier on an old man.

I have a Hensley air-bag hitch and I use the front end loader on my tractor to lift it in and out. It is one piece and weighs about 250 pounds so actually to heavy for two people to lift high enough to get on the tailgate. If I didn't have the tractor then I would just leave it in all time.
