Good that you found that. Too many people putting these rigs together don't realize the importance of making a good connection.

Yep quaility is important to us by Keystone. In the metal junction box coming from my 5500 Onan the wires got so hot that the only thing left of the wire nuts were the metal inserts. The junction box was so hot it would burn your fingers if you touched it. I had to prune off 4"/6" of wires and then reassemble. At least there is no more burnt plastic smell when using the generator. Glad you found the water heater issue before you had a fire.

Been there done this. I too have repaired the very same wires. I was lucky enough to smell the hot plastic melting and went right too looking for the cause. I truly believe it could have started a fire it was so hot when I got in there. After that little experience I have been going through everything and either replacing wire connectors or tightening them up.i have found many. Most were in my fuse panel. Good luck and I hope you find all the other little bugs.

That wire really should be a 12ga instead of 14ga, 1400 Watts is just right at the limits of 15 amp wire. I’m going to check the connections to my frig and fire place now.

Yup, Similar thing happened to mine. Only the spiral wires from the Wire nut were left. Lousy Breaker did not trip so I got a smoky melted Styrofoam that set off the Smoke Detector indicator of failure...at least the breaker worked manually to turn off the power.
I completely rewired mine. Eliminated the little rocker switch on the WH (which had failed several times). Put a 20 Amp Residential switch inside the RV so now NEW heavier wiring goes from the breaker to the Residential switch to the Thermostat and element. Bypasses the lousy junction box.
Hopefully is foolproof and has worked well for 4 years now.

Maybe Keystone should offer these Trailers as a DIY kit; that way we could assemble them correctly from the beginning.

Its too bad LOW BID drives this industry!
WH with minimum acceptable wiring and cheapest lowest rated rocker switch.
Front Jacks with one motor, a plastic gearbox and jackshaft to the other leg.
I'm glad my old unit came with hydraulic slideouts - the Reservoir may leak but the pump and hoses have held up.
Cheap ABS holding Tanks that are not structurally supported.
Trailer Frames that are routinely broken - don't they know how rough US roads can be?? And what about the OEM Tires???
I've read how only the cheapest LED lights are in the newest RVs.
And the SamSung Res Fridges most commonly seen option are the worst rated (we're looking at a new Fridge for our house).
At least the Suburban Furnace lasted 13 years (but living in AL - how much is it ever used???)
At least for a DIY I've found a new Hobby repairing my RV.

I spent some time with various dealers and manufacturers in Northern Indiana 5 & 6 years ago. It appears that the manufacturers were touting the Amish workforce they employed. Years ago the workers were paid a salary or an hourly wage. Apparently 6 or 7 years ago the manufacturers started paying piece rate for the work. The more pieces, the more money. Apparently the workers started working fast enough so they could meet the minimum required number of pieces quickly and return to work on their farms early in the afternoon. Gone were the days of Amish workmanship.
