Good Roadside Emergency/Breakdown Video

Every once in a while I see a video that catches my attention and really makes me think. This one is from some fellow Montana owners that experienced a breakdown alongside Interstate 84 near the Idaho border with limited services. While watching the video, I kept putting myself in their shoes and feeling their frustration and anxiety. At the end of the video, they have some good tips, a few that even an old road warrior like myself can learn from. I especially like the one about consolidating all your roadside assistance phone numbers and vehicle info on your phone(s) to carry with you.

The video is 30 minutes long, but I think all of us whom travel the interstates and highways can relate to.

Enjoy:

Jim,

Thanks for forwarding. Long video for 3 or 4 minutes of good info. When you are traveling with your home, there should not be much that you don't have.

Fantastic video. I learned a lot about what to expect IF we ever get stuck like that. Of course we all hope it never happens but best to be prepared.

I noticed that video when they first published it. I thought it had some great information to share. Got me to thinking what if.

I travelled that route last June and can relate to the area enough to appreciate the video and the information provided. My two closets are blocked by our slides, so I will need to rethink about a few items to access them elsewhere. I do have a self powered emergency type radio with shortwave or CB frequencies. I probably should see if it will be of some use for bad cell reception. Appreciate the video, Thank You.

Thanks, lots of great advice there. Before we went to Alaska in 2016, we had a CB radio and antenna installed on the truck. This would be for when we are in an area of no cell service, at least we have some method to communicate our distress. We have never had to use it for that, but it's peace of mind.

The "Need Help" sign is definitely a good piece of advice. We never would have thought of that one!

Good video. Good suggestions. Breaking down in the middle of nowhere is a scary concept, especially with a rig that is difficult to tow.
Can the truck and 5th wheel be separated by pulling the disabled truck using a tow chain from another truck? I suppose this is a one-way proposition because you won't be able to re-hitch them until the disabled truck is fixed. But a good Samaritan with a tow vehicle could help separate the two, then take the 5th wheel to a nearby campground, then bring the owner back to resolve the disabled tow vehicle issue. I guess you'd have to be awfully lucky to find someone willing to do this.

Thanks for sharing this video. It's made me rethink some of my safety accessories. Like having a phone list written down as well as included in your phone. There is no telling how many phone numbers I don't know off the top of my head if the phone dies. These smart phones allow us to forget that until the phone quits.

Excellent video! We keep our "bug-out bags" in the truck and a small one for the dogs. DW is a planner/prepper/survivalist also, so I don't worry about her going into panic mode - just the opposite. We also carry solar charging mats for phones etc.

I have had no problems with towing the truck and trailer connected. It has happened a total of 3 times over the years to us and one of the times it was with our current rig. I must say however, I was concerned the first time they towed it that way.

Can you call 911 for roadside assistance?

Is it considered acceptable to call 911 on a breakdown like this, and request contact info for local commercial emergency roadside assistance? Or would the police consider this a misuse of 911?

As I watched this rather long video I was struck throughout with the disturbing fact that there was no attempt to move the vehicles to a safer location. They were parked very close to the roadway in a location that offered a huge amount of room to move to a safer spot. The truck and 5th wheel could have been driven away from the road, the tow truck operator could have moved it simply by using a chain but that measure was never taken or even discussed. The most important factor was ignored and not once addressed in their discussion.
#1 safety factor is to get your unit as far away from the traffic lanes as possible.

I noticed the same thing. But they were making a video so they had to put some drama in there.

That said it was a good learning tool. And made me address my safety equipment or lack there of
