Change Those Air Conditioning Filters!

I have been putting it off for months. Just kept forgetting to pick up some filter material. At about 4am heard a loud "clunk" from the forward air that brought us both right out of bed. Turned on the lights and discovered some water leaking from the overhead air. Shut both units down and dried stuff out.

Pulled filter this morning....lets just say it was hard to see through it. Obviously it had frozen up and a chunk of ice had dropped off making a loud enough noise to wake us up.

Living room (zone 1) filters were loaded with saw dust from factory and they were in horrible shape. Shame on me...these should have been changed when I purchased the unit in January.

New filters all cut and installed, both airs working great.

I will be changing these every month or so from now on.

I pulled my filters to vacuum them out after about 8 months. I couldn't believe how much sawdust I cleaned out of the ducts when I had them out. These are the a/c INTAKES! Can't help but wonder how much made it into the unit. Really? Don't they have Shop Vacs at Keystone?

A learning from last year. I now buy enough to change them monthly for an entire year in the spring, cut them and then carry them around until needed. Don't need to change them every month in every winter, but last year in Yuma we did for sure. 80 degrees in January and dust storms will do that. Anyway, trying to find filter material in the fall and winter is almost impossible. Even now, Walmart in Manhattan, Ks is out and may not have anymore. Last winter I thought surely it would be no problem in Yuma, but it did turn into a search and I bought all Home Depot had to get me thru till May.

yes do it now.. We first checked ours at about the one year mark and they were both completely clogged with wood chips and sawdust. This thread jogged my memory and I ran outside and pulled the covers. The were both completely clogged with wood chips and sawdust...... Again. Have not seen anything that bad since our 95 Coachman TT were so much wood chips and sawdust fell into the ceiling lights that they dimmed out.

I am gonna do it after every trip now. Thanks for the memory Jog.

The last two winters out in Vegas we had to clean the filters at least every 3 weeks. The dust desert dust out there is so fine it gets into everything It got into our blue ray player and virtually destroyed it. The entertainment cabinet now has a vent fan and a cut down furnace filter. This also gets changed every 4 weeks.

I found some thin black material at Menard's. It was enough to cut and replace all three filters probably 2 or 3 times for $10.00. I couldn't find it at Lowe's and I didn't try the local Walmart. It should be in the same area as furnace filters.

Dumb question... Where are these filters? My 2006 Montana just had a thin foam strip in the bottom. Is that the filter? I have a new Mountaineer and suppose I should check for sawdust, etc in the filter if I know where to look.
Thanks in advance.

In my unit the filters for the rear AC are behind the return vents in the ceiling on either side of the ceiling fan. For what it's worth mine were full of wood shavings too.

I have never replaced the filters on any of the rigs we have had. They are subjected to regular cleaning with plain old water. Wring the water out, let dry and reinstall. Has worked fine for the past few years.

It could be because we full time, but ours got raggedy over time so I just went to replacing them. It also, at times, could get hard to get all the cat hair to come off.
