Hookman, the 2955 is about the lightest Montana and the 2980 is a bit heavier and has a higher pinweight. However, there are many of us here towing 3400's with 3/4 ton trucks. Mine's a Ford with higher ratings than most SRW one tons but is a 3/4 ton nonetheless. I'm over the GVWR/payload but added airbags to give mine equivalent carrying capacity to the Ford 1 ton SRW. My 3400 is very heavily loaded, at 14,620 pounds and 2860 pinweight. But this same truck previously handled our 2003 3295RK at 14,360 pounds with 3300 pinweight. It did so with truck level and in perfect control. The airbags provided the lift to keep things level. You may well be over the GVWR so you will have to make your own decision whether that is ok or not. So long as you are a private hauler the GVWR has no legal ramifications unless someone decides to press a suit claiming you rearended them or otherwise caused damage because you exceeded the GVWR on the truck.
My 3/4 ton has GVWR=10,000, Tow rating = 15,400, and GCWR = 23,000.
