I have a PacBrake on my truck and an ATS commander as far as holding back the brake works great the only issue I have is when you hit the throttle the Commander doesn't release and the engine becomes sluggish but PacBrake is working on the problem. I was at Pacbrake today and the problem was solved. One switch in the commander was in the wrong position. It was set up for a Ford

I'll bet that's right c5racer. I like going up AND down when not towing anything, but most of the time I was pulling a tandem dual wheel gooseneck loaded to the gills with construction equipment. Thats one spectacular view from the top.

I have the BD brake in my 04 Chevy Dura. Love it. Works great with the allison and engine combo. My diesel guy said that the Banks system didn't work on Chevy's worth a Darn, and he would reccommend the BD. Made in Cnada, but that's ok. I reallyh like it,and they stand behind it 100%. Really helps on the long passes like the Sykious, and Indian John, and fourth of july.

Brad, in my opinion you don't need it with the torqueshift and powerstroke 6.0. You have two things working for you. One is the downshifting of tow/haul. But, better yet, is the variable geometry vanes in the turbo. When you lift off the throttle those vanes close, creating exhaust backpressure. A psuedo exhaust brake, if you will. No doubt an addon exhaust brake would provide even more braking but I've done a two mile long 14 percent grade both uphill and downhill plus a couple of 12 percenters and several ten percenters with over 14k pounds pushing on the truck. I see no need for an addon with the 6.0/torqueshift combination. Just my opinion but based on a lot of miles and some serious grades.

Not sure if you ever got a definitive answer to your question regarding an exhaust brake on your 7.3 PSD. I put a Banks exhaust brake on my '01 7.3 last year and after making trips to the Rocky Mountains, Black Hills and Ozarks, my two word answer for the Banks exhaust brake is "it works". The Banks brake is a little more expensive than some of the others units but, I believe you get what you pay for when you take in consideration the engineering, the quality and product support. And, while some people correctly mention the attributes of the newer 6.0 PSDs with their tow/haul feature and how you don't need an exhaust brake, the sad truth is our 7.3 PSD which does not have this feature and without an exhaust brake you are only counting on wind resistance, friction and TV/5er brakes to slow you down when going down those long mountain passes. Good luck - I think I will go with an exhaust brake.

The new PRXB Pacbrake is the latest in the exhaust brake technology it in my opinion is the best brake on the market. It brakes to lower speeds than any other brake out there. If you call Doug Scott at Pacbrake he will give you all the info on their brakes. 1-800-663-0096

Thanks for responding on the 6.0. I didn't want to hijack Mike's thread, but I was just curious.

I drove the 7.3L for five years over the Rockies and it did like to run away a little. I always thought about an engine brake, but just never did. After having this 6.0 for a couple of months and a few trips over the Rockies, I'm confident I won't need one, even with the triple. It performs completely different than the 7.3L both up and down hill, heavier brakes, and even the Monty brakes act better with the brake controller. Not saying the 7.3L performed bad (loved that truck), just different. The 6.0 is a little more precision, as I'm sure the d/a is as well.

Looking back Mike, I wish I would have taken the incentive you are now with your 7.3L. Probably would have saved a little hair on my head and the steering wheel might not have had those 10 little finger impressions.

Thanks tpbuck1 and bsmeaton for the additional input. I have decided to go with either the Banks or Pac...leaning toward pack, with the torque converter lockout, installed it runs abour $2100+. I'm shooting to have it installed by the rally in Lake Sisikyou (sp)on Memorial Day. I will need it to traverse the mountains between me and the rally.

Mike, you have the 7.3 so might well want an exhaust brake. I have the 6.0 with variable geometry vane turbo and, thus, builtin off-throttle exhaust backpressure, as well as the automatic downshifting of the excellent TorqShift tranny in tow/haul mode. Towing 14,360 lbs(22920 total) down a 2 mile grade at 14% on Utah highway 12, I applied about two to three seconds of brakes every quarter mile or so and that held our speed just fine. But that backpressure in the turbo makes a huge difference, acting as an exhaust brake of sorts. On that same highway we also had a 12 percenter, two 10 percenters, and several 8 percenters. The numbers scared me when I saw them (also had to do the uphill side at those same percentages) but it turned out not to be a big deal with this truck. On the 8 percenters and under no braking was necessary except when encountering a curve with slower speed limit.
