The new fuel requirements that say for "2007 Models" are for commercial trucks only. Check here: http://www.chevron.com/products/prod...sel/ulsd.shtml

Congratulations! I've had mine since January 2005 and just turned over 7000 miles. Runs great and I get better mileage every month. It's now at 14.8/14.9 combination freeway and city. I haven't towed my newer 5er for a long distance so I'm not sure what the towing MPG would be yet. You'll love yours...good deal! Allison

Cat--What's that about saving $1,000 on the rebate because your truck came in one day less than 10 weeks. Did Chevy just lower their rebates? Hope not, because I'm hoping to get the $1,500 rebate Ford is offering on the 2007s, and I'm more likely to get it if the competition is also offering rebates when my truck gets delivered in November.

Also not sure I understand your post about the new fuel requirements. Everything I've heard from Ford and other dealers is that all diesel engined pickups, not just commercial vehicles, sold after January 1 are going to have to have the new diesel engines that can only use ULSD fuel. What I saw in the link you provided indicated that "on-highway heavy-duty diesel vehicles" are covered. Not sure what that includes, but I'll bet it includes all one-ton pickups, and probably 3/4 ton pickups as well.

Does anyone know for sure?

All of the "new" diesel motors will be required to burn ULSD. USLD (low soot) is required for the particulate filters in the emission system also higher EGT temps will be required to burn off the particulates . You will note a fuel line into the Accumulators that will feed fuel into them when the temps are not high enough top burn the particulates off. That fuel does not run the truck. There will be a decrease in MPG..how much we have yet to see..So we are told at the old bus garage..

Well I hope the new fuel will help with the plugging up of the EGR valves. This is one of the major problems with the newer diesels and the reason so many are un plugging thier EGR valves.

The diesel clamptrucks we use in some paper mill wharehouses have a "scrubber" that is changed out every 12 hours. The scrubbers are cooked in a high temperature oven to be cleaned. This system is only 2 years old at one of the plants I work at. These scrubbers are about the size of a 3 gallon pail and are quite heavy. A power hoist is used to lift them off the top of the exhaust stack.

People working in the building noticed a huge improvement in air quality.

Just took the plunge and ordered my tow vehicle in order to be sure not to get the new diesel coming out in January. I ordered a 2007 F350 SRW CC LB 4x4 Lariat trimmed truck with diesel and auto transmission. Ford has extended the powertrain warranty on the 2007s to 60 mos/60,000 miles, which eases the concern I had about the tranny as it gives me an additional 2 years/24,000 miles of protection.

I want to thank the many people who helped me reach this decision and who provided very useful advice in connection with selection of the features and options for my new truck. Limited slip rear axle, electronic shift on the fly, and reverse vehicle aid sensor were easy calls thanks to your advice. The overwhelming comments and info in favor of the crew cab made that an easy decision for me as well. Steve Reigle, your experience in driving around the national parks in southern Utah sold me on the 4x4 option. Rich, once I was forced to go with the SRW because of my condo's parking restrictions, I went with your suggestion to get the most truck I could by going with the longbed. Ron and Don, I followed your example and went with the camper pkg in order to get both the rear stabililzer bar and the overload springs in the rear. Had a tougher time choosing between the FX4 pkg and just the skid plate pkg, but ultimately went with just the skids--don't figure to go off road very much, and the dealer made it sound like the heavier shocks in the FX4 pkg would make for a bit rougher ride the rest of the time. Bert, I went with the all season tires rather than the all terrain tires for the reasons you suggested. Don, sorry but took a pass on the moonroof--I've already had one episode of skin cancer, so I'd probably have to keep it closed up most of the time. So I went with the powered rear window to help the air circulation.

Now that I've nailed down the tow vehicle, I'm looking forward to putting my research energy into finalizing my choice of 5er. I'll study up on the competitors to the 3400 that others have identified. Hope by the time of the rally next month to be as confident in my decision to go with a 3400 as I am that I chose the right tow vehicle for my situation and my personal preferences.

Thanks again, and hope to see many of you at the rally next month!!!!

We are told that the new diesels will still have the EGR valve and the new fuel should have no effect on them..again we shall see.I just don't want to be the one to find out. We did not get the diesel in 05 because of the uncertainty..hope this all sorts out.

David...did not mean to confuse you...Chevy had a $1,500 rebate in progress, the morning I went to pick up my truck they added another $1,000. Had we picked up the truck one day earlier (the day it actually arrived at the dealer) we would have missed out on the extra $1,000.

Re the fuel requirements for 2007 vehicles. Here is the quote from the Chevron article that's been posted before:

"Which vehicles are required to use S15 (ULSD)?
All on-highway heavy-duty diesel vehicles manufactured in model year 2007 and later will be required to use S15 (ULSD) - See FAQ "Why is S15 (ULSD) required?" These vehicles will be forbidden to use diesel fuel with sulfur content greater than 15 ppm (parts per million). Some 2007 light-duty and passenger car vehicles will also require S15 (ULSD).

Vehicles not specifically designed for use with S15 (ULSD) may use either S15 (ULSD) or S500 (500 ppm) diesel."

The consensus on the RV forum is that 'heavy duty' means the big boys, all pickups are technically 'light duty.'

Here's the site again: http://www.chevron.com/products/prod...sel/ulsd.shtml

Cat--PHEW!! I thought that maybe the Chevy rebate went down. Glad to hear it went up--that is a better signal of where the Ford rebate will be at when I get my truck.

As for the ULSD fuel requirements as of Jan 1, 2007, I think you are incorrect in suggesting that they don't apply to pickups. In any event, I'm glad to be getting the "classic" 6.0L diesel rather than taking a chance on the 6.4L diesel coming out in the Ford pickups after Jan 1. Let the buyer beware!!!!

David...what am I missing that makes you think the new diesel requirements will include us? BTW, I agree with your engine choice, that's one reason I wanted a Silverado Classic...no question at all.

Cat, all I know is that the Chevy and Ford dealers I talked to were indicating that the 350/3500 diesel trucks that they would be selling after Jan 1 would have the new ULSD emission systems. Maybe they didn't know what they were talking about (no surprise there), but it seems clear that Fords sold after Jan 1 will have the new 6.4L engines. For the reasons I articulated in my prior posts here and on your thread about your new truck, I decided to go with the F350 rather than the Chevy 3500 because of the payload differences between the Ford and Chevy SRW trucks. I had already decided I wanted no part of the first year of the new Ford 6.4L diesel, so I was going with the 6.0L. I'll leave it to others to figure out just which pickup trucks sold after Jan 1 are going to come equipped with those new emission systems and which ones can still handle LSD fuel, but I'll be surprised if Ford trucks with the 6.4L will come without the new emission systems.

David,

Congratulations on your new F350. I sure hope you enjoy it for a long time to come. We have 218,000 on our 7.3 and it is still pulling like a champ. We're on our way to pick up our new(er) TV we've named "Overkill" and will retire "Mighty Whitey" from pulling but certainly not because it is not strong enough. Hope your experience with the 6.0 is as good as our experience with the 7.3.
