Wind Deflector on truck
[font=Comic Sans MS]I spent a few hours getting the stains off the Monty today after driving along the soy bean fields on I70 in Indiana. The beetles and bugs were splattering all over the place!
Has there ever been a consensus of opinion made about the use of a wind deflector? I’ve heard that they don’t really benefit fuel-wise, but do they really work as bug & debris deflection.

With tongue in cheek I suggest you go to the thread "freightliner conversion" to see Steve Reigle's post on a large, red, wind deflector. It's an extreme way to go, but it does keep the front of the Montana clean. One drawback is that nobody knows you're pulling a Montana until they're next to you.
It is easier to clean since there are no decals to deal with.

Tried one years ago, didnt help.
Started spraying the front with any type of cooking spray, now we use
Granola oil spray. Sure is easier to wipe off. Even the love bugs come off with a paper towel.

Most people say they actually reduce mileage. I AM CERTAINLY GOING TO TRY THE COOKING SPRAY FOR THE BUGS. WHAT A WONDERFUL SITE THIS IS.

Having eliminated half the love bug population in Alabama this year on a trip, I found that I wet the nose down with water, got a couple of bounce dryer sheets and wiped them right off.
On the negative side of using cooking spray - now this is just hear-say but I have heard that the cooking spray if not properly removed completely will tend to yellow over time. I have no proof or experience just what some experience campers have told me.

Thanks for the ideas on debugging! I particularly like the thought that if I use a wind deflector I would be covering up my Montana name. I would rather wipe bugs than to do that!

I'm with you Ross, I sure do like to see that big ole Montana name on the front of a rig coming at me.
Wind deflector for fuel savings - don't even go there. Unless your driving 80 plus miles an hour you will not be saving that much fuel to offset the cost, besides the design of the Montana nose cap is a pretty good wind deflector itself. Cleaning bugs off - goes with the terrority.

Gotta go with the rest and save that money on the delector and use some of it for dryer sheets. In fact tell the person doing the laundry to save the used ones. They work just as well.

I like the "cooking spray" idea. It reminds me of my younger days driving a gravel and sand truck. When we were through for the day, we wiped the entire truck down (cab, box, etc.) with a rag soaked in kerosene or diesel fuel. It sure kept the truck from getting all stuck up with the "dirt."

I have no first hand experience with wind deflectors but have heard numerous times from those with the experience that they have to be at precisely the correct angle for the particular rig. If correct, it can help mileage. If incorrect, it will hurt the mileage. Again, no first hand experience, just passing on what I've been told.
See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!
