hydraulic pump on Montana Mountaineer question
Getting the 5er out of mothballs for summer and after a huge hailstorm, to inspect all the damage. I attempted to put out the slides and the two smaller ones went out all the way but the large one went out all but about 6 inches and the pump sounded like it was running empty, checked the resevoir and it was empty. My question is what kind of hydraulic fluid do you use? I know to check fluid levels with the slides in. Some people say brake fluid and some say atf fluid. Need some professional advice from you fellow moc'ers
Thanks

ATF, on the recommendation of the manufacturer.

That's what they told me, too. Anything is fine.

I'd stay away from brake fluid ... like said any cheap Dextron II / III or Mercon 5 tranny fluid.

Whatever fluid you use, the one definitely not to use is Type F. Lippert specifically says do not use that one as it will mess up the seals.

I'm curious as to why you need to add fluid. It didn't evaporate.

Yes there must be a leak, I see some oil on my landing gear right under the pump but I assumed it was from my old log splitter that I cable lock to the landing gear when I have it in storage. The leak is the least of my worries right now, I have 2 roof vents to replace, all the lights on the right side of the rv to replace, taillights and awning. Then next winter it goes in for new roof and siding. Damn I wish the insurance company would have totaled it. Oh well, off to wally world for some atf fluid and to find that leak.

It is not always ATF, mine came with plain old hydraulic fluid which is clear, and easy to see, where as far as I know ATF is reddish color , and pretty easy to see.
My manual calls for ATF , but being a clear fluid I called the local dealer, and he told me they can end up with either ATF or hydraulic fluid. I would think it would not be a good idea to mix fluids.

Found the leak and it was an easy fix, there are three hoses that hook to a manifold right by the pump and they were all loose from the factory, almost just finger tight. Tightened up and wiped everything down. Will run out the slides tonight and see what happens.

Glad you found the problem and an easy fix. I have had to tighten some things on my 06 but hardly blame the factory. Sometimes things get loose over time. Jim

Doesn't matter what color the fluid is that is in your system, it's still the same thing. Just use any ATF, and it will be good. These rigs don't have to be certified to fly, so mixing isn't a problem.

ATF is hydraulic fluid. Just has dye in it and some other additives needed for the transmissions, but not needed for pure hydraulic functions. And yes, mixed it and no problems. Also did the popping fix, added anti-stiction oil to the tank, which stopped the popping.

Added ATF to the original clear fluid 3 years ago ... no issues nor did I believe there would be.

Also good to know, thanks. I found it odd that my owners manual said ATF, but was obvious it had just plain hydraulic fluid in it .

When they assemble these rigs, they are using large quantities of hydraulic fluid, which is the same weight as ATF, so they don't need the dye and additives because they aren't filling transmissions. To tell us we have to use a particular hydraulic fluid, and for us to find a quart or two of the same fluid would create quite a challenge. So, get ATF anywhere makes our life much easier and has no negative affect on our hydraulic systems, because it is hydraulic fluid.
