My recent research (after reading this thread) found that Tweety's sells the Progressive industries SSP-50 surge protector for $100. Progressive Industries also makes a EMS-PT50C which is a surge protector plus voltage protector. Tweety's sell this unit for $348.77. Sounds like most of you are using both a surge and voltage protector. Correct? From what I have read I have been blessed since in 20+ years of camping I have not used one and have not had any problems.

When I asked about a surge guard no one mentioned they were using a surge and voltage protector.
I phoned Tweedys and told them what I wanted it for and they sold me the SSP 50.

What do I Need? My fiver is 50 amp, but my seasonal site is only 30 amp. Even when traveling I prefer to use 30 amp vs fighting with the 50 amp anaconda cord, unless I'm staying for awhile in hot weather. I use the 50 to 30 adapter from fiver to 30 amp cord. If I buy the 50 amp surger protector from tweetys, can I connect it to the fiver first, then reduce to 30 amp to the pole? Or, do I have to connect the 30 to 50 to the 30 amp pole, then the 50 amp surge guard, then 2 more adaptors to use the 30 amp cord? I'm getting more confused as I ask this ?

There are two types of Surge Guards/voltage protectors. One is internal (to minimize theft) or HardWire and the second type is external or Portable type. Many members use the internal version so it can be permanently plugged somewhere inside the rig (typically by the power converter) and away from thieves. The portable version has 4 blade straight style of connectors, different from your 5er which requires a 3 prong 50 amp connection.

Your question is assuming you are using the Portable model that plugs in-line with the shore power cabling.

If you opt for the portable, you can plug it in series where the 50 amp connectors are available. However, be aware that since the portable model uses the "four blade straight" style of female and male connectors and your rig probably has a three prong twist connect, so you may still need adapters to change the connectors. Then you can plug into the 30 amp adapters to get to the shore power box.

You actually have 4 possibilities:

1. Buy a Surge Protector. Runs about $100 but does not protect from voltage problems. It only protects from voltage spikes.

To ALSO protect from low voltage brownouts which can damage air conditioners, refrigerators, microwaves, anything with a motor, you need one of these:

2. Buy a less expensive 30 amp portable Surge Guard and use in series with your 30 amp cabling. You will not be able to use this if you ever want to connect to 50 amps.

3. Buy the more expensive 50 amp portable Surge Guard, but you might need 50 amp adapters to convert accordingly. This will protect you for 30 amp and 50 amp shore power. This will be exposed to the "environment". You can take it with you easily to the next rig.

4. Buy a HardWire 50 amp Surge Guard (a little less expensive than the 50 amp portable) and install or have it installed and not have to worry about any cabling changes. Finding a location and installing can be tricky or pricey especially if you follow their requirement that a qualified electrician install it.

Other members have installed theirs along with other nice power stuff. Search for topics and pictures in the forum.

This is what Helmick bought (it is priced for $110 here):

Here's what most of us more expensive Portable SG folks think about:

And here's what a lot of us install:

Of course there are other brands, better products, etc., but it is my impression most of the posts are about these products.

Tweetys has the portables, 30amp for $80 and the 50 amp for $100. Would I be better off buying both as Art suggested, or are these two inadequate for my trailer. Everywhere else the 50amp are much more expensive.

When you're talking about prices for products, be sure you're comparing apples to apples and oranges to oranges, not apples to oranges. It's hard for me to believe you can buy a bona fide 50-amp Surge Guard (that's its name) for $100. If so, then a lot of us have been taken! I'm afraid I paid $300+ for ours.

Got our 50amp surge protector back in 2005. I paid just under $400.00. Just replaced it in 2009 and again seems like I paid just under $400.00 again. I always use the portable not the hardwired type. By doing so its just plug and play and no additional charge for install. As ols1932 said be sure what your buying. GBY...

WARNING!! Thread Hi-jack in progress!!

Can someone with the 3500RL type of power connection, which is located at the rear end of the trailer, tell me where they put their hard wired protection unit at? Since the fuse panel is located at the entrance door, I am guessing in the basement, but the access to that area looks like a nightmare. I have no problems taking things apart, but sometimes have extra parts left over...

I have a 3665RE and my panel is also at the front door. I took the power feed off the panel and spliced 50 amp wire to it. then I ran the wire through the basement above the curb side basement door and drilled two holes from the basement front wall into the propane compartment. I ran the wire through one of the holes, accross the top of the front compartment and mounted the surge protector near the battery on the back wall. Then, out of the bottom of the surge protector, I ran a wire to a 4 wire 50 amp stove outlet. From there, I plugged in a 4 wire 50 amp stove cord and wired it to a junction box. From the box, I ran 50 amp wire back through the second hole that I drilled and wired it back into the panel. When I add an autoformer, I just need to unplug the stove cord and plug in the autoformer. I hope I haven't confused you with this explanation. If you have any questions, PM me and we can talk on the phone.

Thanks!! No confusion at all! How did you access the back of the pannel - or did you remove it and access it that way?

Just bought the 50amp portable from camping world online for 25%off presidents club price. reg 410.10, presidents, 369.99 minus 25% = 277.00 plus 7.00 reduced spipping. The one for $100.00 at tweetys.com was very basic, light duty. Thanks for all the input, Ray

After reading these posts, I just ordered the Surge Guard 50 Amp portable model #34750 from CW. It was on sale for $327.99 and as far as I'm concerned well worth the money. Too many items on these new models that need the protection. I'll just get a 50 to 30 pig tail to use when I just have a 30 amp plug in.

Tim - not sure if it "saved" me or not, but mine kicked me off line this weekend at Camp Lejeune Onslow Beach. Lots of thunderstorms in the area. Lights flickered a couple of times, shortly thereafter it cut the electric off. About 3 minutes later it came back on. Nothing damaged. Mandatory in my mind with all of the electronics on these things!

It saved you probably a lot of headaches. I wouldn't be without my Surge Guard. It has saved us when five rigs around us got hit and hit hard.
