I got better mpg in the HDT then my pickup is getting towing the same 5er. Insurance is a wash between them.

Parking does get to be a challenge; I do like parking the Ram vs the HDT. But, we are looking for another HDT, plan to be back into another one within the next year.

You don't mention that HDT's turn better than pickups. That's the biggest irritant to me - don't mind the length and width, but needing a half mile to turn around is a b*tch.

It is a private owned coach/tow vehicle. They do NOT haul new units for dealers, unless doing it illegally(highly unlikely), as it isn't DOT registered. Someone with a setup like this isn't hurting for the low paying monies to tow new units to dealers.

I`m willing to bet that this unit is getting in the neighborhood of 8.5 - 9 mpg, and thats on pretty flat highways. Mountains would be a little less, around 8mpg. This setup is pretty dang close, if not more than what my empty weight would be on my semi(daycab) and 48` trailer.

That fiver is also a triple axle unit. Probably 42-43 feet long. Usually most of those tandem axle units are running 8k oil bath axles and of course they have disk brakes and 17.5" rubber. Truck, jeep and trailer are still probably only about a third of what the OTR truck is probably rated to tow.

Yah, they can. But mine was singled long so a smart car or 3 quads could fit on the deck. Mine didn't out turn a pickup 😀. They are the bomb for long range running. We did a fair number of multi thousand mile trips and their is no comparison.

I saw a set-up where the daily car was small enough to fit sideways behind the cab. Don't know what the loading was like tho. Must have had long ramps in order not to bottom out.

If he's pulling a TT, why the sleeper cab? In case he and the DW have a fight?

On the subject of a 300 gallon fill up... that only needs to be a one time thing, even then, when you acquire such a rig it may already have a decent quantity already on board. After that you simply add fuel just like driving a PU. There's no rush to top off the tank if it's low either. The pro is you can pick and choose where you fill up the 20-30 gallons you used to drive 300 miles you drove or pocket it and buy 40-60 gallons later at better price. With 300 gallons on board you can afford to wait and get the best fuel price. Rarely should you ever drain the tank between fill ups. Money Management 101. Everybody is getting freaked out by a 300 gallon fill up... If you run that way then yeah, you will have some big, but infrequent, fuel bills.

No freaking out here. I simply pointed out an observation. We did extensive research on the HDT subject and may still go that route.

The milage that rig gets is about the same as what I get now.

Most folks just are not used to filling up 300 gallons (or anything close to that) regardless of the price per gallon.

With my 48 gallon tank I have learned tha my CC company cuts me off at $100.00 per fillup. But if I wait for the pump to reset for the next user I can re-run my credit card. LOL would have to do that 7-8 times to get the 300. Then again I would only have to do that once maybe twice a year.

Took me a while to stop laughing at that one. I cannot imagine that I would be pulling into AM/PM to fill up my HDT. Filling up once a year at a truck stop would be a dream.
