Tire pressure/temp

Here's the situation that happened to us today travelling from MA to PA. Some where in NJ my wife looked at the TPMS & one tire was at 119 PSI/123Temp. The rest were around 100# & 80 degrees. I stopped to check the tire; it was hotter to the touch than the others & the hub cap was hot. Couldn't find anything else wrong. So we continued on & the temp & presure start to come back down.
within 30 - 45 minutes the pressure/temp was back to where the other three were. continued on for another 45 -60 minutes with no problems.

What are your thought on what happened. Continuing on to Wash DC tomorrow - will keep an eye on it.

Did you check the wheel bearings?

Perhaps your brakes were dragging and released when you stopped to check the heat buildup.

There was no play in the tire when I checked it, so assumed the wheel bearings were ok. the suggestions about the brakes dragging sounds reaasonable. I will keep an eye on it today.
Thanks everyone fort the input.

I agree the brakes were probably dragging. If it were a bearing problem it wouldn’t suddenly go away. After reading all the responses brakes are the most likely culprit.

Thanks everyone. Made it to the Wash, DC area today without incident. Will keep an eye on things as we head south. Have an appt in Atlanta in Nov to get things checked & bearings repacked. Will be sitting in NC & GA for three weeks each before that.

When you get a chance you should pull that wheel and check the brake pads to make sure you didn't wear the pad down too far.

I carry a heat gun that why I can put the beam in different areas of the tire, wheel drum area to find where the hot spot is. I would assume if you did that and put the beam on the bearing area and outer part of the drum you could have a better idea where the heat was coming from. I agree it was most likely a stuck brake but I would check the bearings to see if the heat baked anything.

Here's an update!
Had a mobile guy come out today & pull the wheel off. Found the electro magnet was worn and the spring on the bottom was stretched, & the bearing were almost dry. Had him replace the whole assembly & repack the bearings. Did not look at the other three wheels since they were not giving any trouble. Will have it in the shop within 700 miles for a checkup.
I watched him do the work, so I think I can do the work the next time.

Tpms issue

Yesterday, my right rear tire started to read low pressure @32 psi. I stopped took it off and checked it out and it was 109. Today I get the same tire alert but this time it says 297psi. Again, I stopped, took it off and it was 109. Put back on and it started reading correct.

Which TPMS and how long since the sensors got fresh batteries?

You could have a bad battery or a bad sensor. If the battery is several years old, I would start there.

I have tire sensors and mine started reading strange numbers as I pulled into a campground. I called manufacturer and they asked if I just got to a park. Yes. They said they changed the sending unit codes and I was probably picking up someone elses sensors. Sure enought when I pulled out a week later, everything was fine and never acted up for the next 5 or 6 weeks until I was home.

Does the tires have to re-balanced when you use a monitoring system?

There is another condition that can cause a single tire position to heat higher than the others. It's early stage tire/tread separation. The first visual indication that something is wrong with the tire is it's height. It will grow taller than the others.
