3400rl square footage

I've looked on the Keystone web site, and the search feature here and couldn't find it anywhere. Does anyone here know?

Thanks in advance.

There has been discussion on here before; some say it is just merely a model number, however most of the Montana units I have seen it seems to correspond to square footage. 3400RL, 340 sq ft. Merely my opinion, and I'm sure someone will be here shortly to correct me.

The last time I calculated the square footage on our 3400, I came up with about 384 sq. ft. but I may have been off a little on the slides The RV industry is supposed to conform to some type of guideline that 400 ft is the max. I read this somewhere, cannot verify if it is true, but the 3400 is supposed to approach the maximum allowed??

I have a 3500 and believe without the open floorplan design like a 3400 probably has a little bit less square footage than a 3400. Therefore I don't think 10% of the model number implies square footage any more than it matches the length of the rig.

I guess a chat with Keystone marketing would answer that. When measuring square footage, it's measured from wall to wall, right? That is, the floor space of the furniture and cabinetry should be included, correct?. I'll have to measure my 3500 one of these days, just for curiosity sake. I still believe it is bigger than our first apartment and I couldn't haul that anywhere. My Monty certainly has more amenities.

When I bought my 3400RL back in 2004, I was told it was 400 sq ft.

Heated and cooled floor area. Interior length X width + slide area. IIRC, 400 sq ft and above is subject to property tax here in TX.

When we picked up our 3500RL, I asked the guy who did our 'tour' what the square footage was, and he said just under 400 square feet, citing the same thing you said about some law stating they had to be under 400 square feet. He didn't know for sure what the reasoning was though.

Here's some links that explains the magic 400 number:

When we were at the factory I asked that question and the factory rep said that the unit had to be under 400 sqft (something about RIVA) and the 3400RL was 399.9 sq ft. Don't know if that is correct but it's the answer we received.

I was told a couple years ago that the 400 sq ft limit had something to do with RV parks and local licensing versus property tax requirements. Under 400 sq ft was considered an RV and NOT subject to local taxes. Many RV parks will not allow park models over 400 sq ft as it changes their Tax Status in the communities. I also heard that an RV park must hold out a certain percentage of spaces for the OTR RVer to continue to be considered an RV Park. That is why you will see many "RV parks" with many park models and manufactured homes, BUT a certain number of spaces for the true RVer.

We are looking at staying at one of these parks this winter and really would like to know the whole story. The above MAY be hogwash. If anyone knows for certain, please post.........

Seems the 400 sq ft or less requirement is a Federal law. Anything above that is a Manufactured Home, and thus has to be built to different standards. A book is available for purchase online, about $30, but I don't want to know that bad.

I decided to measure our 303RLD...I came up with 298.5 sq ft...I would say pretty close for the rough measuring I did.

I was to understand that it had to do with codes for electrical/plumbing. Very expensive to go over that sq footage and upgrade the mfring process to conform to the 401+ footage codes. 400 or less can be done much faster/cheaper/simply. Obviously a bottom line business decision.

If you have been to the factory tour, you would see a wiring and plumbing process that you would never want done in your stick house...

I was told during a Keystone factory tour that the 3400RL is 400 sq. ft. I don't know how that's measured. They also said that's the largest allowable in an RV, by law. Above that and it's a mobile home, subject to different construction standards. They said the five slide trailers either are shorter or have smaller slides to stay under that magic 400 sq ft mark.
