Vac. cleaner

We are in the process of finalizing our order for a 3400RL. Kathy is interested in feedback from the person in charge as to what they use for a vacuum cleaner? The built in unit you can get with the 5th wheel or a stand alone?

I ask and do what she wants. She actually had that written into our marriage ceremony.

For us the Vacuum issue is a mixed bag (pun intended). As is, the central vac doesn't hold a candle to the Oreck we used in the 2003 rig. Storage is easier with the central unit, but that anaconda hose to reach from one end of the unit to the other can be a challenge to handle. Dianna's physical limitations with shoulder pain means I do the vacuuming.

Many folks get the battery powered rug beater head offered by Intervac for around $160 because the CV just doesn't get it done. We opted for a separate battery powered sweeper unit from WalMart (less than $50). It is very light weight and Dianna can use it between my vacuuming duties.

My conclusion is that I would not choose the central vac if I were ordering for the following reasons: (1) lacking in suction power (2) not effective in vacuuming carpet (3) the hose is cumbersome. I am sure other will disagree with me. That's why we have choices.

Ditto...and I'd add (4) something else to break.

That is one thing that was a must have for Helen. With the power vac head it has the pick up power. Vacuuming is not in my job description but Helen seems to think it does the job. Also do not have to find a place to store a stand alone unit. We have had no trouble at all with the unit. I have used it to vac out the truck and and the compartments and it did OK...

We love it but we do not have pets so that may make a difference.
Happy trails.................

We have a 2003 Big Sky. In the summer of 2003 we added a Dirt Devil central vacuum and love it. It's located in the basement of the rig and does a great job. Has tons of suction power. I did just order a turbo head, works on the force of the vacuum, not battery operated. I hope that does well. If we ever change rigs I think I would take this one with us.

The central vac is amazingly powerful. We sure like it and would do it again.

We also vote for the central vac. We have the battery powered beater bar, it works really well on dog fur. It works at least as well as the Kenmore Central Vac in our stick house. Never had an Oreck to compare it to, but for us it seems like a powerful little unit.

I wouldn't do with out mine. We have a cat and there are little bitty hairs every where. I don't have the power head, need to get one. When I am vacuming the bedroom on the closet side I just have hubby hold the hose for me, or if he isn't around the foot works pretty well.

The vacumn would be one of the first things on my list. Now the Fantastic Fan might get the boot.

We also like the central vac. We got a rug rat head that works fairly well. Just did the basement by passing the vac hose through the laundry area. We like the convenience.

Just make sure that there is a bag in the unit before you use it. I used mine for quite awhile before I asked DH to change out the bag. To our surprise and amusement...there was no bag attached!! The compartment was filled with dust bunnies, but no bag.

I think it was John Kohl that pointed out - you can unscrew the four corner screws and unplug it, carry it outside and vacuum the truck as if it were a canister type (and get it reinstalled before the DW gets out of the shower)

Our 08 Big Sky came with the vacuum installed. Because we have two labs, one of which sheds 24-7-365 the normal head wouldn't do. Right after we got the rig home I called Intervac and visited their website. I ordered their battery powered head and we love it. It does a great job of pulling most of the hair out of the carpet. When we get back to Wisconsin we usually run the house vacuum through the rig and then the carpet scrubber to clean it all up from 7 or 8 months on the road. When we got home last spring and vacuumed the rig we didn't get any more dirt that we usually do with the central unit so I guess the central is doing a good job... Dave and Betsy

central vac works great but my wife would NOT give up her Oreck upright! We use both and thanks for the hint of taking out the screws and usin outside, had not thought of that option! Have used it in the basement for cleaning up.

Love ours and it definitely has the power to clean vehicles. We also have the power head - suction powered - and it makes a big difference. We would not order another Montana without it.

I don't if it was an option in my 2008 3400RL or not, don't remember having to order it ,but I got it. Its works well. Can't imagine why anyone would want to haul an additional vacuum. Its built in and stored out of way. Compared to a stick house such a small area to vacuum and take care of it seems more than adequate for a fifth wheel. Even with the grandkids last summer sure seemed to get the job done.

Our 06'3400rl has central vac but we bought it used and the previous owner lost the acces.pack (head, hose, and all). So, we use our dyson and have not ordered the acessories and probally won't, the dyson works just fine. Steve
