Underbelly crossmember falls off

While in storage for 3 months I found crossmember laying on the ground. Rusted off or welds failed. 5 year old rig. My dealer doesn't do welding. Looking for a repair place tomorrow. Anyone else had this problem?

Hi

I have had problems that needed welding but not like you describe.

I use a portable welding service they are commonly not any more costly than taking it to a shop and I prefer a pipe line welder they are recertified every time they do a new section of pipe.

Now a word of caution for you. Regardless if you use a portable welder or a shop make sure they have plenty of fire control equipment on hand, the trailer is disconnected from all power even the battery. You will insist on several fire extinguishers as well as one or two running water hoses.

These trailers once set on fire burn quickly so make sure the welding company is very prepared to handle a fire.

When we did the failed spring hanger I put the trailer on the concrete floor that is the floor of a barn that a hurricane destroyed. There was enough room to drive my TV in a circle around the trailer on all sides I had a running water hose in my hand and stood very close to the welder. We didn’t have a problem but I had remove the under belly and moved all material that wasn’t metal a safe distance from the area to be welded. That left only the wood flooring that would be close enough to be heated by the welding process.

On my 2010 and 2015 the underbelly crossmembers are bolted on, not welded. If we are talking about the same thing, you don't want them welded, because if you ever need to drop the underbelly they have to be removed.

The piece was bolted on now that I've seen it better. Having a RV shop repair and check other underbelly securements.

Just one of the yearly job crawl under the rig and tighten all the bolts you find. Same with the fenders. If it has a screw, screw it a bolt tighten it.
