I also run 60# when not towing. When in tow 80# in the rear because of the weight and bump the fronts up to 65#. When the Monty is on the rear there is only 50 more pounds added to the front axle, so for traction I don't inflate to 80# in front. I have Michelins on the truck with 19000 miles on my D/A. See-Ya

I just lowered my Coopers to 65 (semi warm). I'll check them in the morning. Right now in N. MI it 90 degrees. Hard to get the tires to "cool" down...

I drove about 40 miles on several different surfaces. Didn't really notice any difference in the ride that I could tell. Am I supposed to? Or is this just strictly better for the wear on them?

Dave,

Huh?

What did you say?

I couldn't hear you.

Someone was driving by with soft Coopers on a diesel.

Steve

P.S.

Felt kinda good this evening when I saw the weather map showing 90 degrees in Chicago, and about that much in Minneapolis. It's been 97 here, today! And humid! Ack!

I waved! Your hot humid weather finally drifted across the lake over to us. Only 90 here, though. Try to keep that 97 stuff over there...

Dave,

We're in southern Alabama! It was just that we've been thinking it'd be nice to go "up north" to get relief. Until I saw the temps in Chicago, and my wife's hometown of Minneapolis.

I've been watching the sky all day, hoping it'd rain. The only thing that happened was some clouds blew in. The temp remained outrageous, but the humidity went from 95% to 125%.

I just figured, since misery loves company, the rest of the country may as well be sweltering, too.

Anyone note the temps in North Dakota?

So... that wasn't you I waved at??? Hope that guy didn't misunderstand my gesture...

Don't come up here for relief, Steve. All weather systems pick up MORE humidity as the prevailing winds come across Lake Michigan. Feels like you need gills sometimes in the summer here. Lakes here are almost 50+ degrees now. You stand in Torch Lake up to your knees in ice cold water, while the rest of your body swelters in the 90+ heat and 90+ humidity. Skin turns red in the water from the cold and red on top from the sun. Just dunk your head you say??? That called a heart attack... This is not nearly as much fun as it sounds... But better than passing out in your inadequately air conditioned home...

Is anyone listening to me??? Or did you all leave???

Anyway, I am now at 65# on my Coopers. We'll see how this goes...

Dave,

I'll make a note that you won't be joining the Convention & Visitors' Bureau for Michigan.

In Alaska, you couldn't really swim in most places because the water was either too frigid if it was moving. If it was still, it often grew all sorts of algae and bugs due to so much sunshine. Down here, the swimming pools are warm as bath water.

Still, I can cope. No one around here knows what a snow blower is.

Right! Depends on whether or not you are fortunate enough to reside in a "Snow Belt". We therefore call it a "snowbrush" in these parts...

I always found it strange how Alaskans called snowmobiles "snowmachines."

I come from Connecticut. But haven't been back there for decades. We had the snowbrushes with scrapers on one side, and a brush on the other. Can't recall whether they called them that, or "scraper" in Alaska. Maybe "scraper." We used them a bit more than a brush to remove the hoarfrost. It was so cold a lot of times that we didn't have to scrape much. Too cold for the thicker ice. Cold enough for "square tires," though!

Dave all stock 245 LTX M/S. Dealer helped me trade out of OEM tires to the Michelin's. All I hear is the XM radio when I drive, But I do like the sound of my Duramax! See-Ya

DarMar, I looked for the Long Trails but BFG does not make that model in LT265/70R17 LR E, which is what my Ford came standard with. The 17 inches is what they don't make in that model. The LT does carry even better numbers and I was looking forward to even better wear. These still have quite a bit of mileage left on them though.

On the Montana I went with BF Goodrich Commercial T/A in the original 16 inch size, load range E. I've only put 4,217 miles on those tires since March 5th but they are looking really good so far. In another 20k or so miles I'll know if I still like them as much as I think I will.

Dave,

The owner's manual doesn't list anything other than the stock tires that come with the vehicle. The tag inside the driver's door does tell you the original tire size and the amount of air pressure they should have in them. We still have the original tires, we rotate them every six months, which is longer than recommended, but they have over 30k on them and still look brand new.

I just found this... Any comments? This gives me pause as to whether or not I should keep these 265s on my truck. I'd like opinions on this. Do opinions override GM Service Bulletins???

Service Bulletin

Bulletin No.: 01-03-10-010A

Date: September 2002

Chevrolet/GMC

Information

Subject: Inspection of Tire and Wheel Size Prior to Diagnosis of Transmission Shifts, Poor Performance, Speedometer, Cruise Control Concerns

Models: 2001-2002 Chevrolet Silverado Pickup Models

2001-2002 GMC Sierra Pickup Models with Duramax™ Diesel Engine and Allison® Transmission

Proper Diagnosis of engine, transmission, speedometer, and cruise control concerns must begin with an inspection of tire/wheel size.

• The 2500 series trucks have LT245/75R16E tires as standard equipment.

• The 3500 series trucks have LT215/85R16D tires as standard equipment.

A truck that has different tires and wheels will have Engine power/performance concerns, Transmission shift concerns, Speedometer registered speed concerns, and Cruise Control concerns.

If a truck is found to have other than the above listed tire sizes, no further diagnosis should be undertaken until the original size tires and wheels have been reinstalled on the truck.

The Engine Control Unit (ECM) and Transmission Control Module (TCM) use (RPM) and (VSS) inputs as operational parameters for engine torque, transmission shifting, cruise control operation and speedometer indicated vehicle speed.

Calibrations for different tire/wheel combination are not available.

Therefore changing of tire and/or wheel size should not be undertaken by dealerships or truck owners.

Warranty Information

Reinstalling the proper wheels and tires on the vehicle, prior to performing any diagnosis of the truck, would be truck owner responsibility and not a warranty repair.

If your truck was under warranty this would trouble me. A larger tire will put more torque on our drive train. Pulling 12000# plus pounds I will leave my tires stock. With all the electronics on todays auto's IMO it's best to go stock.

I think it would be a concern after it is out of warranty, too. Your computers are all calculating that tire size, and as you say, there are so many computers regulating engine performance, I would be a little concerned, I guess. I know that for gas mileage, I will have to add 3.9% on my miles, as my speedometer runs less than actual speep/distance. I also believe someone told me that with this size tire, my rear end ratio is effectively dropped to 3.53 or so. Less torque. Not sure if at the same time this might also tramslate into better gas mileage...

Guess I could take to my tire guy on Mon. They specialize in big rigs and trucks, as well as tow vehicles.
