Hitch Quality

We are looking to buy a 5th wheel hitch for our Ford F250, full size/3000RK combo. I have noticed that there is a huge price spread between the different companies offering hitches with similar features. Any idea why? Is there a difference in quality? usabiltiy? As an example the RBW X-16 with the universal installation kit is $396 while the Reese 16k is $846 with similar features. Finances dictate a budget hitch, but if there are issues with these cheaper units I may have to spring for more.

In some cases you are paying for the name. As long as the hitch is rated for the correct wight, has comparable metal construction as the other name brands, has a rocker head (moves back and forth and side to side), has automatic locking when backing onto the king pin you should be OK.

I don't know anything about that particular hitch but RBW has been around for a very long time and as far as I know makes a good hitch. My first two hitches were RBW and I had no problems with them. The first was used and I replaced it with a rocker hitch by RBW. Then I went to a bit bigger hitch with slider when we bought the first Montana. I'd have no problems going with RBW again.

That price for the Reese almost sounds like it includes installation while the RBW does not. Or maybe the Reese is with a slider? If you have the longbed you don't need the slider.

HitchHikers are a Canadian Brand, great quality and a reasonable price.

We've been at this 5er stuff for almost 15 years. Our first hitch was an RBW and we moved it over to the next truck and 5er. Ed would grease and paint it and it was still good when we traded in. We decided to go with a new one for the new truck and Monty (almost new). It is also an RBW. Our local RV Tech swears by them (he has been in the business for many, many years). We too noticed the difference in price between the RBW and Reese. I then did a bunch of research and could not justify the difference in price.
Happy trails.............................

Thanks for all the input. We just picked up the RBW and I will install it next week. I checked the installation instructions and it does not look too difficult. I own a Meineke Autocenter so have access to lifts and tools which should make it even easier. The RV shop wanted $300 for the install.
