Roof Edge Sealant

Sorry folks - I'm sure this has been covered before but couldn't find good info with a search.

Our Mountaineer has the roof edge rolled over the side a couple inches where it is attached with a trim strip. at the top of the trim strip there is a bead of something that sorta looks like a semi-clear but whitish silicone, but probably isn't because silicone doesn't adhere to EPDM. It doesn't look like the Dicor lap sealant either. It actually looks the same as the caulk they use around slideout trim, etc.

I'm noticing some small gaps here so think it's time to do some repair. Question is, does anyone know what this stuff is that they use to seal that edge?

Thanks in advance,

Greg

Thanks for the info Ken. I do have a partial tube of that Dicor and have used it before around the vents, antenna etc. The stuff that is on those side edges doesn't seem to be the same though. It looks just like silicone and is kinda feathering at the edge like silicone does when it starts to let loose. Maybe I'll get to CW or another trailer place and see if they know what it is that Keystone uses.

Call Keystone customer service. They usually are pretty responsive. If it isn't Dicor please post what you find out. Thanks, Dick.

Id love to know what it is as well.
I have used Dicor non sag in the past but it's not the same as the factory applied sealant.

Keystone is using silicone, and it turns black and peals off after a few years. Here is a YouTube video on the subject:

Ours doesn't look nearly as bad as his did in the video. They must have learned a bit since his was built as ours has eternabond on the slide tops over the screws.

Think I will give Keystone a call tomorrow to see what they say. I'll let y'all know. Thanks everyone!

If you're speaking of the seam on the sides of the roof running the length of the camper ... I'm pretty sure it's just white silicone sealant. The Dicor self leveling that is used on the vents and end cap joints doesn't feather with your finger plus since it is self leveling, would just curtain down over the vinyl insert on the aluminum extrusion. I've used a good quality silicone in the past with good results ... it feathers just like OEM.

I think you are right dieselguy - there is no way a person could apply dicor the way that seam is sealed. I am not even sure that seam is all that critical...suspect the EPDM may overlap the roof a little there and the trim covers up the overlap and holds it down.

Without the silicone, water can get behind the extrusion and the extrusion is attached with dozens of screws into the side frame.

Yep, and I bet out of those dozens of screws water is going to find it's way in some of them...time to find some good silicone. Thanks for the good advice!
