Chatfield State Park - Colorado

Louise and I are planning a trip to visit our son's family in Littleton, Co. We are planning on staying at Chatfield State Park. After previewing the site lengths, it looks like the maximum vehicle length is in the D loop of 45'. That's plenty long enough for Monty, 38', but not my truck. Has anyone stayed at Chatfield and can you clarify the site lengths for me? I talked to the reservation person which was of no help and if I call the park number I get the menu and no person.

We stayed there recently, and it seems to me we were in the A loop. Plenty of space there for our Montana and the pickup. We have a 2955, which is not quite as long as your rig, but there was plenty of space. One thing to be aware of is that there's a limited clearance (12'6", if I remember correctly) at the main entrance. There is a south entrance you will need to use if you're taller than that, and you probably are.

No problems exiting that way, but the entrance has a canopy over it.

Very nice park, though. You'll enjoy it.

Good luck!

We stay in both A and D all the time. They are pull outs, so the length restriction only means that length that is parallel to the road. You still have the drive to get into the site in front and back of your rig that you can park on. We typically have to adjust for trees because of the slides on both sides, so sometimes I have to disconnect and put the truck behind the rig because we are scooted up too far.

Thanks for the info. Do you remember which site(s) you were in Brad? Did you have the 3400 when you were there?

Dick, I think your rig would fit in any site in D loop. Some are drive thru and some are back in in D. A loop and D loop have full hookups as well as the east 1/2 of B loop. The west 1/2 of B loop and all of C are electric only.

A 10,11,12, and 13 are outer perimeter sites that would have some view of the marina and lake. Easy walk to the marina.

B 65 and 66 have a good view of the lake, but you need to double check if they're full hookup or not. They're right on the edge.

C 108, 109, and 110 have great lake views, but are elec. only.

D has no view of the lake from anywhere. D 158 is a nice back in site I like. D is a newer loop and has better grass and trees than the other loops.

Thanks. Of the sites you mentioned, B 65 is the only one available during the time we are going to be there. It shows a maximum vehicle length of 35' and mine is 38'. I think we'll probably settle in D loop as all of the available sites would probalby fit our needs.

Brad is right, you can get into these sites. This is a great park. I learned to fly Hot Air Balloon here years ago. They still fly at dawn from the Balloon port. Also, you may want to take in the Tamale Kitchen #6 across the street in the shopping center, for wonderful tamales and salsa that ranges from great to blow you away, go mild.

Depends on where in Colorado. We are currently camped at Vallecito Lake, near Durango, and the temp rarely exceeds 75 during the day, and drops to mid 40's at night. In Durango, which is only slightly lower in elevation, the temps have been 85-90 during the day. In the Denver area, you can plan on 90's to 100+ for about two weeks during the period mid July to mid August. Last weekend, though, the high temperature was 60 degrees! Go figure!

Anyway, as Brad said above, there's no humidity to speak of, and it cools down to mid 60's or so at night. Keep in mind, too, that the weather you get from Denver is reported from the airport, which is 45 miles away from southwest Denver, and may or may not indicate the true story at Chatfield.

At any rate, Colorado is beautiful, so come on down and enjoy your stay!

Yeppers, as Scattershot says, if you don't like the weather in Colorado, just wait a few minutes. Snowing on the high passes last week while it hit 100 here.

Chatfield is not one of the most picturesque parks to visit! It's almost in the suburbs of Denver now (area growing) like Cherry Creek park. If your destination is the Denver area that is great, but if you're vacationing from out of state there are much prettier state parks to visit. Meuller is at the top of the list (nationally) and a multitude of other parks near mountainous lakes if water is your thing (Ridgeview, etc).
