Goodyear Marathons
Ok,I have a 2012 Montana 3000 RK that is a month old and has less than 100 miles on it. I went yesterday to where it is stored and saw the name Marathon on my tires. Now I am a little worried. This is a new unit and I really don't have the extra money lying around to replace 4 new tires. How does Montana continue to put low qualty tires on their units? Any suggestions on another tire to replace these with?

Anything that provides the needed weight capacity and does not have a stamp on the side that says "Made in China" would be a good starting point. We opted for Goodyear 614's, pricey, but so far worry free. An acceptable cheaper alternative in my opinion would be ST rated Maxxi's. Depending on your rig weight (I would assume a 3000RK would be in the greater than 15,000 max weight so I don't think any of the LT tire alternatives would be of consideration unless you strictly control your weight. I am sure you will get other considerations, but foremost is you have to know your max trailer weight as you use it (weigh it) and you have to know your loaded pin weight (again weigh it) in order to make an informed decision.

The dry weight was 11200, as weighed by the dealer, and the max gross weight is listed at 15000. Still I guess she needs to go on the scales.

Yes, it needs weighed when it is loaded as you use it. Some people use up their carrying capacity and some never approach it, that is why loaded weights are critical, some will argue that you should always use the maximum loaded weight for safety reasons, but even then accurately knowing your pin weight is a critical part of the equation. When you know your pin weight, it can be subtracted from the maximum weight in order to see what remaining weight the tires have to support. Divide by four and you have the weight each tire must support, add a safety factor and you will know the loading capacity for each tire that you will have to have. Then your search can begin. As I always say, I am far from a tire expert, but rather rely on some common sense aspects of what can safely be used. Hope this helps.

Check to see where your Marathons were made. Country of origin is on the side wall.
Rumors were that Goodyear was bringing them back to the USA.
Just a thought.
I switched to BFG TA commercial LT tires on mine.

Call Goodyear's customer service line and ask for a supervisor. If you get one fine, if not just tell the person on the line "I have a heavy weight Montana fifth wheel. I intend to use it extensively. You know and I know that Marathons don't belong on this rig and that somewhere down the road we'll be talking about replacement and damages to my rig. Can we avoid that by trading them out now for G614's?" Mine had several thousand miles on them when I finally called and because my rig was a previous year the tires were two years old. The sent me to a Goodyear dealer who measured the tread and called Goodyear back. They offered me 5 new G614's mounted and balanced for $800. I couldn't really afford it then either, but I couldn't afford not to take that deal. Call them, all they can say is no and if they don't offer a deal you can afford they you can say no. If you decide to keep those tires, however, get a tire monitor. Tire monitors are a good idea anyway, just for peace of mine.

I went to a Goodyear only truck tire dealer when my unit was new. He gave me a $125 per tire trade in allowance for the Marathons, and the best price I could find anywhere on a set of G614's. It really takes a load of stress away knowing that you're not riding on China bombs - and the price was well worth it.

Declared Shipping weights or pin weight are never good to use for weight calculations. Use the max ratings and the scales to now the actual weights. Everything else is an estimate and not necessarily pertinent to YOUR rig. For example, adding a larger fridge, second A/C, fireplace, etc, will affected whatever was documented. However, the gross or maximum axle weights will pertain to like models. You just have to ensure you stay under that and the TV can carry and pull it safely.

"How does Montana continue to put low qualty tires on their units?" I believe that most 5th wheel/travel trailers are used by summer campers that take mostly short trips. Some products with quality issues and workmanship with limited quality control can be in these units with no adverse effect on sales.

I replaced mine with BFG commercial TA. The one thing I was advised of was that the tires must be rated to haul as much as the axels. In other words mine has 6,000 pound axels so my load ratings for the two tires on that axel had to be at least 6,000. Easily achieved since they are rated at 3042 each.

DQDICK,
Do the G14's you replaced fit on the factory rims that came with the Marathons tires or did you have to replace the rims also?

SK,
I have been trying to follow this too. The tire size is the same, well one is 80 and the other is 85, but it's the pressure rating of the wheel that matters. The Marathons are 3420@80 psi, and the G614's are 3750@110. From what I have been reading, the newer trailers with the Marathons are stamped 3750 on the inside of the wheel and that is where you check to see if it can handle the 110 psi.

Seahunter & SK,
You can go to the tire supplier and lookup you wheel and see what pressure it will hold. the website is:
http://www.tredittire.com/Aluminum-Wheels-C10.aspx
Click on your wheel and it tells you the info.

Yes they fit on the original wheels of all the newer model Montanas. Since ours was a 2010 and some of the 2010's made in 2009 didn't have the right wheels, I checked with Tredit. I could also have crawled under it and looked on the back of the wheel, but I'm old and park on gravel. Anyway mine were good to go.
