Turning Radius

My new 2011 Big Sky has the "Max Turn" Technology". That means it has the front rounded for aerodynamics and being able to make a 79 degree turning radius. They state "With "Max Turn" , pulling or backing is no longer a burden.

My question: With a 79 degree turning radius pulling or backing how
much strain does that put on the axles, springs, wheels
and tires when backing up. The truck at that point would
almost be pushing the trailer sideways.

I have watched trailers being moved in dealers yards with a fork lift
and they actually do push them sideways leaving tire marks all over the lot.

you are going to put some stress on the tires and wheels, but what choice do you have if you need to back into a tight spot? You will not be turning fast enough to do any damage, that is why they might want you to recheck your wheel nut torque every so often. If you are turning that sharp at highway speed, tell us where you will be so we wont be there:-)

I believe the max turning radius implies when towing with a short bed. I have a long bed and have put a 90 degree turn on the trailer yes it leaves pivot marks in the gravel drive. Lots of side stress that is why I put the XFactor on the center Mor/ryde suspension and had the spring hanger brackets capped after I found one broke.

I have a short bed truck that I used to have to use the slide feature of the hitch from time to time in tight situations. With the new Monty with Max Turn Technology, I have not had to slide it yet...and there are situations when I would have had to before.

Your right...the xfactor would help a great deal with the side load you put on the suspension with those sharp turns. Got one on order now.

I find when backing into a tight sight and see the tires getting twisted up I'll move forward 5 or 6 ft to help relieve the twist in the tires. That will usually help get the truck in a better line also. Lots of CGs are gravel and the tires scoot to keep from twisting.

What does the Mor/Ryde X Factor system run for the 3580RL Big Sky?

Frank,
I bought mine directly from MOR/ryde (574) 293-1581. I paid $120 plus shipping. They make and adjustable and non-adjustable unit. The one I got is non-adjustable. You can give them a call and they will recommend what is best for your application.

On a slightly different note I have a roll-n-lock cover on the back which has rails that rediuce the width of the tray by about 2" each side. This is enough in tight turns for the back of the pin box to hit the rails. I have been slowly grinding bits off the back of the pin box so that it will fit inside. I still have about 1/4" to go it looks like by the gouges in the slide. Problem is it keeps hitting in a different place depending on the slope of the site.
