OK need help on the purchase of gps map software. I am looking at the delorme LT20 w/street atlas 06 or the microsoft streets and trips. I have done a little research and am leaning toward the delorme. Any of you have either product?

I have microsoft streets and trips 06. I am still trying to figure out how to operate the thing. I have to make a trip to see the grand kids, maybe they can figure it out.I tried to get some help from microsoft but I need an interpreter to figure out what the overseas person is trying to tell me.I am from the old school,turn it on run it, turn it off to quit. It would be nice if I could find some classes.

You are leaning the right way. We use Delorme daily and wouldn't be without it. At $99 how good is

We have DeLorme and love it. It does take a little bit of time to learn but it is well worth it. If you do a search for GPS here on the forum you will find a lot of discussion and some helpful hints. Post questions while you are learning, there are lots of GPS users here on the forum.

We use micosoft streets and trips and works fine for use. But I would check out others before I purchased again.

I'm going with the Delorme because I've aleady had a few years of experience with it (Not the GPS feature - only mapping and trip routing), and I don't really want to go through a learning curve if I don't have to.

I looked over all the information on the Delorme LT20 and it looks great to me. The only disadvantage that I see is that it does not tell you your elevation. If you want that you have to buy another $100 program. Don't know why I need the elevation but thought it should be part of your location and just one of those things I find interesting.

We have the GPS from Delorme (Earthmate) that plugs into a laptop and it does show the elevation. One of the features we enjoy about it when traveling in the mountains.

I have both. I like some things about both but use Streets and Trips more because it is easier to learn and easier to plan your route. New 2006 Streets and Trips has voice direction like does DeLorme. Both good packages. S&T easier to learn and use though. My opinion may differ from others.

Thanks Ed or Sue, I went back and checked again and to my surprise there was a elevation showing on the sample screen. Some one must have added it when I was sleeping

I also have both. I have the 2005 version of DeLorme's Street Atlas and the 2006 version of MS's Streets and Trips. I like each of them for their strengths and dislike their weaknesses. I'd be most happy if there a way to combine the strengths of both into one package.

In my opinion, Street Atlas is the more powerful and has more commercial businesses in its database but is more challenging to learn. Streets and Trips has more campgrounds and is easier to learn but doesn't have some of the power of SA. Neither has all of either cg's or businesses.

S&T is easier (by far) to set up a new route, especially when you want to change the route it chose. But both can do the job and SA is not really all that difficult. SA (DeLorme) will show you the next turn and will track the distance remaining to that turn. It also shows you the turn after that. S&T shows just the next turn but does track the distance. SA shows you how far to your next stop and to end of day. S&T doesn't show those but I wish it would. Now that the 2006 version of S&T has voice direction I moved to S&T and that is currently the one I use most of the time.

I really don't think you can go wrong with either. There are plenty of people in this forum willing to help you out when you have questions. Good luck. I rely on the gps during our travels, even many of our sightseeing trips.
