High temp and high pressure on one tire

We put new upgraded wheel bearings in our 5th wheel before this current trip, and today we hit some good sized pot holes. On pay toll roads of course! Anyway, I started noticing 10 psi more pressure on front right tire and 20 degree higher temps with our TST 507 tire monitors. When we got to the campground, I got busy and forgot to check, but one hour later, I used my laser heat measuring gun I have, and the right front rim measuring right near the hub was 40 degrees warmer than all the rest. I jacked up each tire on the right side, and the back tire spun freely with no noise. The front right spun freely, but it sounds like the brakes shoes are dragging a little? We have been getting that check trailer brake wiring warning on our RAM 3500, but it goes away. It only comes on every now and then especially after going over big bumps in the road? I guess I will just do the next leg of our trip, and see if it happens again? Unless one of you has a quick fix for this? I checked the big plug and the trucks socket and in the junction box, and I don't see any sign of any wires arcing?

Not a big difference but worthy of loosening and readjusting that bearing, and adjusting the brakes, maybe all of them.

I don't think it is the bearing, so I will have to find someone that knows how to adjust the brakes.

Dennis,

You may not have anything big wrong - I often see that big a split for the tires in the sun. I would still want to get that brake drum off to look at the brakes. I would also take a good look at the brake wiring too as that may be causing the check trailer brake warning.

Put disc brakes on it and be DONE with all the issues that the drum brake cause. You will be amazed at the difference and will kick yourself in the a-- for not doing it sooner. Trust me.

Can't agree more with what beeje has just posted. A world of difference between the drum and disc brakes. Won't be without the discs on the Monte anymore especially if we should decide to trade, which is very unlikely but who knows! LOL

OK, none of you are going to believe this, but I jacked up the wheel and spun it, and it sounded like the drum brakes were dragging. So I called out a mobile repair guy and when he took off the hub a couple of things fell to the ground! The brake adjuster and the spring! He was wondering how I could have driven so far with these things rattling around inside the drum, without a major failure. I told him I only noticed the temperature rise for the very last part of the trip. Anyway, he put everything back together and adjusted the brakes, and we are praying all stays together this morning on our next leg of our 9 week trip. I will be watching the temp and pressure on that tire like a hawk this leg!

I totally believe it, because I've seen the same problem occur to others.

OK, we made it 220 more miles to our next stop, and all temps and pressures stayed the same because it was overcast and rainy all day. Hopefully for the rest of our trip, we will not hit as many horrible potholes like we did coming from New Haven, Conn. to Gettysburg, PA

We live 30 miles from Gettysburg and go there several times a year camping at different campgrounds. Which one are you staying at ?

We never camped at that KOA, (not really a fan of KOA's ) but have driven through it. If I remember correctly, its terraced and real tight. sites on top of each other. Not my kind of campground. We usually go to Granite Hill. Its wide open in the very back with TONS of room the spread out.

We had the same issue with connected/disconnected message in our 2015 Chevrolet 3500.
Problem was brake magnet, spring & other pieces broken off and roaming free in the Drum. Had Drum assembly replaced & problem solved.

High temp tire / brakes

We have a 2014 3402 we pull with a 2016 F-350. We were also getting intermittent Trailer Brake Wiring notices on the F-350. Took it to the RV shop and they found worn insulation on brake wires going through an axle. The breakaway switch had also shorted-out. The wiring and switch were replaced and the problem was fixed. I don't know if a tire was overheating and I'm not a trailer mechanic, but intermittent brake activation due to wiring shortages could possibly result in overheating.

I posted this on the other issue: SHHH! Don't tell anyone, but ever since Gettysburg, we have driven to New Jersey, then Delaware, then to Virginia Beach, VA, then to South Carolina, and it has not reappeared. When the mobile tech took my hub off my right front wheel, and the brake adjuster and spring fell onto the ground, he put it all back together and adjusted the brakes, and the warning has not reappeared yet? :-)

Hi

We had a similar problem and it turned out to be the brake application arm that the magnet is attached to had rusted in the hinge point not allowing the brake to release completely.

This requires removing the hub to check on that. I removed all hubs and replace the brake shoes and lubricated all the hinge pints for this arm. They all needed lubrication. I use the silver high temp Anti-Seize Compound & Lubricant 8 oz Permatex sold by NAPA for lubricant.

That has been many years ago now.

OK, here is the deal of the decade! My private buyer I had lined up has decided to go with a brand new Montana 3820FK, and if they get everything mine has already including the washer/dryer, and king size sleep number bed and the legacy edition with full body paint and all options Montana offers, they will be paying around 105k with sales tax and license and registration etc. I was going to sell it to them for 63k and my dealer was going to let me trade my 5th wheel in for 58k. I would rather see someone in the Montana club get this good of a deal. So anyone out there want this totally loaded 2017 3820FK for 58k? I will be trading it in around the end of November. So it can be picked up from the Reno, Nevada area around then.
