Getting Independent Suspension End of November
We are going to MorRyde in Elkhart in a couple of weeks to get the IS. Can someone who's done it give us any advice or pointers? Since we have to be there bright and early at 6 Monday morning is there a place to park there overnight? On the 2nd day about what time did they get finished? We will be getting to the area a couple of days before. Is there a campground in or near Elkhart that is nice or should we stay at the fairgrounds in Goshen? Can you recommend things to do (the RV Museum is already on the list) and places to eat? Lastly, did you install 7K or 8K axles? Thanks so much!!

You can stay on their lot. They have 50 amp hookups. There is a train nearby. Elkhart campground is near. They will weigh your rig and advise. We were on the road shortly after lunch. If you sign up, they might buy your lunch

Can you be in the 5th wheel while they are working on it? If so would we have an electric hookup?

When we went you didn't want to stay in the rig even if they let you. They have a nice waiting room with all the snacks and drinks at no additional charge as well as lunch at noon (although it's not really free but you will pay for it whether you use it or not). There are plenty of things to do and see around there so you won't be bored. If you're in the plant overnight, go to bed early because they start really early.

And yes, they can supply you with 30 amp power. I'm pretty sure they don't want you in the unit while they're working, but once they're done for the day, you can go in and even put you slides out, but as mentioned be out and slides in early.

What is a ballpark cost for this upgrade? What are the benefits?
Am seriously considering having disk brakes installed. Is that an expensive proposition? Is it possible to have the brakes done at the fall rally in Goshen?

Good Morning John.
We run a special for December- March for 10% parts.
The independent suspension and disc brakes are an excellent upgrade for your Montana. Our suspension will give you 5 inches of travel per wheel and the brakes will give 30% better braking power. The process takes two days, during this time you may stay in your unit while we work on it. We have 30 amp service insider our building along with a nice lounge with WIFI and TV. The pricing is as followed for 7k and 8k:
7K parts and labor - $5700 (Plus tax)
8K parts and labor - $6200 (Plus tax)
Please let me know if you have further questions or would like to schedule an install.
Thanks,
Rob Kolean

Thanks for the reply!
Do they need to both be done? I upgraded to the 4000 suspension...I hate to waste that.
Am very interested in better braking capability? Possible to do that alone?
Regarding timing...We would do this during the Fall Rally. Is that possible? Any discounts apply?

I ask folks that were going to the rally if they offered any discounts, none were mentioned. I think you can get just Disc Brakes, contact MorRyde for more info.

You can just get the disc brakes only. Some members on here have added just the brakes.

This is the best upgrade you can get. I got brakes and suspension. They weighed the trailer and then suggested the 7,000 pound axle. My brakes were the 8,000 pound brakes. They install these whether you go with the 7 or 8,000 pound axles. There were several DRV's on the property and they were installing the 8,000 pound axles ,but they are much heavier than Montanas. The most suprising will be the brakes. It feels like i can stop quicker with my truck and trailer than with my truck by itself.I have a 2013 ram and my brakes are set at range 7 which is where i had it with the old hydralics and there is no comparison. If someone is going to Mor-Ryde in Elkhart then you might want to get the cargo tray. This utilizes your stuff much better in the cargo area and they will install it for you. I don't think they charged me anything to install it.These are the best people you will ever work with when it comes to your rv.

Just got off the phone with Morryde. The gentleman I spoke with was incredibly helpful and informative. I definitely want to upgrade the brakes to the disc brake system. If there's something I can do to increase our safety or the safety of others (and add peace of mind when towing), I generally try to do it.
In terms of the Independent Suspension upgrade....I'm not so sure. We have the upgraded suspension already on the Monty (SRE 4000) and I can't get a good grasp on how much different the IS will be. The SRE 4000 upgrade is marketed as a significant upgrade over the 3000 suspension offering. One selling point that got my attention is that the improved suspension will significantly dampen/reduce the road shock the trailer receives. So i guess, if not full-timing and towing this thing all over the countryside, that the IS may increase the life of the camper and/or reduce damage/maintenance by reducing impact of road shock?
We plan on keeping this trailer for some time. Love the floor plan and features. Maybe will trade it in within 5-8 years prior to retirement...by then it will be nearly 10 years old but I see 10+ year old Monty's on the road all the time so I guess they hold up well. We'll see what the future holds....but it's not getting traded anytime soon.
Anyone go from the SRE 4000 suspension to the IS system? Anyone with the IS that is not happy with it? Happy with it/notices a difference?

We had the old 3,000 suspension and it was a huge difference to go to IS, but I can't help you with the new 4,000. I will say that we have left stuff out on the counter and when the roads were decent found them in the same place when we stopped. If the roads are really bad, and many are now days, I still wouldn't leave things out even with the IS.

Ours had the 4000 system before the IS upgrade. IS is way better.

I went with the 7,000 pound axle on account of mor-ryde's recommendation after they weighed it. With my trailer loaded i weigh 16,200 pounds. This leaves 12,720 pounds on the axles and 3480 pounds on the hitch. I don't recall how much weight was own each wheel but i was below the limits. The gvw on most Montana's is 16,000 pounds so i am over that by 200 pounds. No matter what axle they install your gvw is still the same as the manufacture is the only one that can set that. With 8,000 pound axles i would be even more over my gvw than i am now but i was willing to go with what ever recommendation they had. The independent suspension and disc brakes increase the weight of the trailer by several hundred pounds. These are the best improvements you can make on your RV but quite expensive. I had the mor-ryde 4100 suspension with wet bolts but after one of the wet bolts broke and shifted the rear axle, i was ready to go with the IS.

You have to understand that the IS totally removes your OEM axles, springs, etc. Once you actually see the size of the IS structure you will understand the difference. IS is exactly that, each wheel is supported independent of the others with a shock on each with increased travel compared to both the 3000 & 4000 Equalizers.
We're on our third unit with Disc Brakes and IS and wouldn't have anything less.

MORryde IS is much more beefy, and looks like it will add 200 to 300 lbs to the Montana, but I haven't had this unit weighted yet, so it is just a guesstimate.
