Need help wiring in a switch

I have one of those Wingard Sattelite domes and I have wired in a recepticle for the plug by breaking into a light in the basement and using the wires. Now I want to add a toggle switch so I can turn off the dish from the inside of the rig and not have to go outside every night to unplug it. I have installed a two wire toggle switch but evidently I hooked it up wrong because it works the same regardless of which way I flip the switch. Anybody got any ideas on what I might need to do?

Only break one wire and install the switch on just that wire.
