stove lighter

Has anyone found a great lighter for the stove pilot that does not require holding a bunch of buttons at once. In making the lighters child proof, they have also made them adult arthritis proof. There must be one out there somewhere that does not require you to hold 2 or 3 buttons at the same time.

I saw this and it works for the stove top and oven.

Here is the link to Electronic Ignition For Stove and Oven.

I always use my propane torch for the stove top burners. Never use the oven, but if I did, I'd use the propane torch on it as well. Gently though so as to not melt anything.

Thanks, I know this project will make Ann happy. She can not light the oven.

You got me confused Tim??? Our stovetop has an ignition knob for the burners, the far right knob that you turn to generate a spark to ignite the burners. or was your comment in jest??? I am liking the idea for an electronic ignition for the oven though, and since it will make the stovetop ignition even easier, I can see the benefits of retrofitting them as well!! Another mod to add to the list!!

I thought there was a thermocouple at the pilot for the oven that won't allow gas to flow until the bulb on the thermocouple gets warm/hot. That way if the pilot somehow goes out the gas will shut off. Am I wrong If so, the electronic igniter certainly does look like a project for the future.

No Jack, you are correct, there is a thermocouple which controls the gas flow. If the thermocouple is not hot, the gas is not allowed to flow. The "Pilot" position on the oven combined with depressing the knob opens a passage for propane to flow to the pilot light. You light this stream of gas which heats the thermocouple and then allows propane to flow after you release the knob.

If the fire goes out, the thermocouple cools and automatically closes the flow of propane.

This will be the next mod I make to our trailer.

Carl (Butch),
Thanks for that....it makes sense now. I always just end up getting fed up with trying to light the pilot and have the lighter in there getting the "bulb" hot and end up lighting the burner for the oven. I see some experimenting in my future and then perhaps a mod to the oven ignition system.

I added a Brinkman battery powered sparker to our oven and absolutely love it. Shop around, I found one at a Home Depot/Lowes competitor (Menards- midewest only) much cheaper than ordering direct from Brinkman. I get sort of anal on these projects, so I bought some high temperature teflon tubing from McMaster-Carr to keep the wire in the oven well insulated. I'm not sure I needed to, but I didn't want to revisit this project- too many others to do yet.

I'd like to know why my piolet light won't stay lit. We go to all of the work to get the oven lit and then the pilot light won't stay lit for future uses of the oven

I would think the thermocouple at the pilot is bad. I would replace it.

I went to Home Depot to purchase the Electric Igniter for $29., then I stopped by Lowes and found the same item for $17.65. Need less to say I bought it at Lowes. Just a statement on price difference.

John,
What is the make and model# of what you bought? I looked at our Home Depot last week and could not find any electronic igniters. I could only find the push & click kind.

John,
Thank you for the reply and info on the igniter. I will be on the lookout for one and add it to my "To Do" list. I would be interested to hear out it works out for you and some photos of your install.

Jack

Senior,
I refer to Bobsals post with photos. He gives a great description of and how to pull the stove out and do the modification. I plan on following his example. I have already printed a copy for my maintenance files.
edit - fixed link to bobsals post.
