Lonnie..thanks for that heads up.I did not know that.Have never had the 4X4 engaged on my shinny new truck so I went out and did that this AM.. Had to actually read the instruction manual to get it into 4X4 low..amazing what you can learn when you read the manual. Everything works fine

Thanks Lonnie. So the lock up on the hub is good for a back up should anything happen to the auto switch inside on the dash.

Thanks Lonnie, that makes sense on the hub. The Dealer said the Super Duty had hubs "just to sell trucks to the old timers that never quite trusted the automatic function" Given your explanation, the Dealer was right, sorta.
So true on keeping the running gear lubed. To an extreme, a partner of mine had to replace the whole front pumpkin on his farm truck because of that. At some point he got a little water in there and because he never ingaged the 4WD for several years, it rusted the ring and pinion together where the water separated from the lube. When he finally did pull it into 4WD, it shattered the front gear and shot part of it through the pumpking cover.

Jim, the switch on the dash also engages the transfer case via an electric motor and gear assembly. If the switch goes bad, manually locking the hubs won't do anything for you, as the transfer case will still be driving only the rear wheels. If the 4x4 indicator light in your dash panel is not lit, the transfer case is not engaged. If the indicator is lit, and only the rear tires are spinning, then manually locking the hubs will work, and might get you out of a pickle.
Brad, I have worked on more front drive axles damaged from lack of use, than wearing out.

I'm not sure my wife would let me keep a wench in or on the truck. She's funny that way.
Now a winch; that's another matter.

Oh........Phil meant "WINCH"! Well those aren't that useful either. I guess the idea is at least ONE of the vehicles in your party needs to NOT get stuck or you just end up winching to each other .

The only way out of that one was we buried a spare tire about 10' down in the sand with a cable tied to it. then winched the Toy out with that. (unloading spare on left). aaahh those foolish days of youth.
