Broken Spring

Today I had a spring break on my 2014 3582RL. Not really sure what happened. Driving down the road I looked in my side mirror and the trailer was in the other lane. I was able to get it pulled over and found that 3 of the leaf springs were missing. I was able to get the axle straightened out and had to secure tight enough to limp it into the next town. It also broke the shear pin. Just curious if anybody has had a spring problem?

Not an uncommon failure. We went through something similar last summer in Colorado. The stock leaf suspension is weakness on all of these heavier fivers IMO.

Check, then recheck the U-bolts. When I upgraded the springs on our 343RL HC found almost all of the original 1/2" u-bolts were barely beyond finger tight. I also used 9/16" u-bplts and check the nut torque yearly - and some nuts are always looser then they were set. Loose u-bolts will let the axle wander and twist a little bit in the axle or bolt plate and often cause a failure of the center bolt via sear action and possibly a spring pack failure.

I had a u-bolt break and cause my axle to shift. Fortunately I caught this in my driveway before having a major problem on the highway. I already had an appointment with Mor=Ryde for disc brakes and I.S. so this confirmed I was making the right decision. Disc brakes, I.S. and G rated tires make for a whole lot of peace of mind now when traveling. Some things just should be standard on rv's of this length and weight.
