Lippert Leveling System

Anyone who has had the Lippert 6 Point Leveling System added to your RV lately how is it working for you? Does it work exactly as the operating instructions say it should?

There is a learning curve to every system. No system works entirely as the manual says because manuals don't cover every possible contingency. But having said that, the system works predominately as stated in the manual. There are some tricks to learn along the way. Things like how to reset the system. It is a computerized system and gets a bit squirrelly from time to time.

It is head and shoulders above the old system. Ease of set up is no comparison. If you have any physical issue that makes set up and take down somewhat difficult, this will supply much relief for you. This is an easy recommend for me to make.

Ditto, couldn't agree more. Would not even consider another rig without it. Our original control head had a problem that you had to play with the power button and we had a leaky jack. Lippert took care of both with no questions asked.

My guess is that in the very near future you will see the Level-Up or similar system on just about all new 5th wheels except for the lowest entry level rigs. In Sept at the Hershey there was only a couple of Montanas with the Level-Up System and most other Salesman didn't have a clue about the system. In Jan at the Tampa Show, almost every 5th Wheel was sporting the Level-Up System. Quite a change in only a few months.

The portion of the system that controls the front landing jacks alone is a quantum leap from the drudgery of setup with the electric and adjustable pin system. When you add the auto level and recall of disconnect height, you think you died and went to heaven.

Add to the positives already mentioned that it will lift your tires off the ground which is an advantage when changing a tire.

Probably just a CYA situation, but Lippert in their literature says not to use the leveling system to change tires. Just FYI.

I'm sure the disclaimer is a must for CYA. However, sometimes when auto leveling, the tires do raise off the ground. As long as the nuts are loose before raising I don't see the concern.

That's what I figured too, as long as you're not fully wrenching on the nuts while its raised it shouldn't make a difference since it can handle being raised fully off the ground.

Frank & Virginia, I know there have been a lot of previous postings regarding the Lippert system. Try doing a search and you will probably find a lot more useful information. We purchased our system after a terrific promo price during the fall rally two years ago and love it.

When I have our system installed (Oct 2010) at TrailAir, they still had an old poster from Lippert for the Level-Up System and one of the advantages listed on that poster was the use of the system to change a flat tire. Lawyers must have advised them to change their adds. You know you don't want to be laying under the wheels and have your other half hit the Auto Retract button, especially if you have a big insurance policy LOL. I have lifted all four tires off the ground in the shop so the function of the brakes could be checked for NYS Inspection. I felt better using the system for that, than them trying to jack up the unit for checking.

When I had work done on my broken rear spring hanger, the shop lifted the tires off the ground and remover the rear axle to more easily get to the task. They welded it all up, put additional support on the frame, and reinstalled the axle. Easier and safer than blocks of wood and a jack. They still put their safety stanchions on each side of the frame.

This reply is not so much about the Lippert Leveling System as it is about changing tires. We have a 2011 Montana, but do not have the Lippert Leveling System. Seems like I've read there are definetly places where jacks should not be placed when raising your coach. If I remember correctly, under the axles is not the proper place because the axle can be bent. Is the recommended location for a jack under the frame?

When I didn't have the LevelUP, I jacked the frame about 4" to 6" to take the weight off the axles and then used a second jack on the axle to just lift the tire off the ground. I think there is a potential problem when jacking the axle without supporting the frame.

This is the proper way to do it. Lifting by the axle alone put all the weight on the axle and can cause it to bend.

If you're jacking the frame around the middle of the main frame which must be about 30' long, are you going to get a lot of bending on the frame or are they more rigid than I think?

OK, I'll throw in my 5 cents worth. Before the Level-UP system, to change a tire I put a bottle jack under the spring pad of the wheel that needed to be changed, takes very little lift to get the tire off the ground vs 4 to 8 inches lifting the frame. Hitting a pot hole or just going over a speed bump will put more deflection to the suspension than in inch or so to get the tire off the ground. Now I would NOT put a jack on the axle tube, that is a no-no. To each their own.
