Heavy sprare tire

I pulled my spare out this weekend to top it off as it was down to 88psi. The other reason was to test out a nice little Craftsman compressor it bought to see that it would get my tires up to 110. Well, in the process I nearly got a hernia trying to drag that heavy tire out. Then I had to figure out how to get it back under. I ended up using a dolly. Now this was all in my driveway and I'm wondering what will I ever do if I have to make a change on the road.
Has anyone experienced this and what is your solution? I'm 72 and just not as strong as I used to be.

I have felt your pain. I'm not 72 yet but have had to change a tire utilizing the spare at 67. I thought long and hard before putting the spare back under the rig. Other option is to haul it in the bed of the truck. I put it back under and hope I have the strength to handle it one more time if the need ever arises.

Been there done that. Now at 76 I keep a furniture dolly $15.00 from Harbor Freight in the garage area in the front of the rig. Even on dirt it’s a lot easer to drag it from under the rig.

I guess it depends on the condition of your bad tire, but how about dropping the spare and pulling forward another few feet. When done, throw the bad tire in the bed of your truck, let the tire shop put it back under when you get it fixed.

You could lower the tire and undo the mechanism that lifts and lowers the tire then drive forward if you have room till you clear tire . This way you don't have to drag the tire out from under the rv. When reinstalling the tire underneath then lay the tire down then back up over the tire doing everything in reverse. You will still need to craw under the rig but I carry a large piece of cardboard. I have changed a flat before and I can still drag the tire out but it does get harder with age so we all have to improvise. I would rather change a tire myself than wait 2 or 3 hours for roadside assistance.

Mine resides in the truck bed after dragging it a couple times on high crown roads since Keystone saw fit to only use sagging 5200 pound suspension on a 12,000 RV. That suspension has been upgraded to 6000 pounds and then some but that tire will still reside in the truck bed. Oh, and I too exceed 72 years old

My spare tire lives in my cargo compartment. I never use the under belly hoist. It stays nice and clean and dry in there, and checking the pressure is a snap.
Now, that being said, that tire is still heavy as you know what! I will call road service for the change. But if I must change it myself I can roll the spare out and let it drop. Then I'll figure something out for getting the flat tire into the truck bed.
Just stay safe out there guys. This gitt'n old sucks!

Thanks for all the reply's. It's good to know I have company out there.
I guess Scott gets the prize for the simplest solution to just pull forward. Sometimes my brain just doesn't click right away. Shazaam. I may look to see if it will fit in the basement as I really don't like it under hanging so low. I bottomed out so badly one time leaving a site I got hung up and had to get roadside service get me out. Not a great design. At least they didn't give us one of those doughnuts like they put in most of the cars now.

I have and use a cheap roll up snow sled the kids use, lay it under the tire then using the built in handle, pull the tire out and the plastic slides on almost all surfaces. Make sure you get a sled that's wide enough to fit the tire on it complete. also lay the sled out in the sun so it wants to stay flat and the lay it in your basement and the place thing s on it like it isn't there.

Mine HC has that pull out rack system - I take it that not all Montana's have that system. The problem I had with that is lifting the handle up to re-hook and getting the locking screw to rethread

3 Montanas and have never had to remove the spare to check/add air but if I had to remove for any reason would pull forward as recommended. I have always been able to do air maintenance without removing. On one of them I installed a flexible line to the valve stem and mounted it to the side of the Montana where I didn't even have to get on my knees.

I’ve noticed that over the last 20 years or so this sort of stuff is getting heavier. I don’t understand it. Why do they always make stuff heavier. A hundred pound sack of corn or wheat is heavier than it was. Wonder what it could be?

Yep, you hit that ol' nail on the head. I just pulled the spare out of my truck bed - thought someone had snuck a 175 pound semi wheel and tire there instead of an RVs 75 +/- pound pound tire and steel spare wheel

You get to a point where your brain says you can do anything you used to do and your body says are you out of your mind.

I actually was going to top off the air w/o removing the spare but then thought I'd check out the winch for the spare and make sure all is working. Should have just let it down and cranked it back up and then added the air.
It's nice to know that I'm not the only one thinking everything is getting heavier.
