Cable support on slide outs of 3400RL
Has anyone had a problem with the plastic cable supports on the slide outs that get folded with the slide goes in and out. It's a pice of plastic about 4" wide that has loops that hold all the cables together. Recently I had this support on the deck slide out break at the outermost connection to the slide out. I just checked the living room side out and it is cracked in the same place the other one broke. Of course, it 2 months out of warranty and Keystone says too bad, so sad! I checked the third slide out (kitchen) and found no crack, but you've got to wonder if 2 of the four have or nearly broken....

Hey Chief! You're not the lone ranger. This is a common, if not automatic problem. It's not exclusive to Montana either, as it seems to be standard for the industry.
Two of mine have already broke. The fix I used given advice from the MOC is a standard 3" outdoor door hinge. The hinge gets installed in place of the cracked plastic and serves as the new pivot point.
Welcome to the forum!

What Brad said. I replaced all three even though only 1 was cracked.

It is a mystery to me why a piece of plastic that continually bends is used for this function. It can do nothing but break, I guess after the one year warranty, but they have been using this sorry piece for years. The hinge as described above is the easy fix.

The only problem with getting fixed under warranty is you get the same poorly engineered part and will eventually have to fix it with a hinge anyway. I just didn't bother taking it in, as it seemed it would only prolong the agony.

Ditto... Replaced all mine with hinges. I also used wood shims on the back side of the plastic for extra support for the hinge screws.

Have seen this same hinge with the same problem on several other brand campers. The consumer accepts the low quality item as 'part of rv'ing" and the manufactureres get away with using them......our fault.

Ditto - one broke on the big street side slide, the big slide on the curb side cracked. Dealer ordered parts in June and we never got a call that they were in. Tired of waiting, so fixed all three with hinges, then they found our parts and were going to install them at customer appreciation rally. We said "no thanks", they gave us the flex strips, and tech also said that there are two sizes, which might explain problems, although can't understand how some of us got shorter ones.

Thank you all for the quick response. Does anyone have any idea if a similar set up is used on the bedroom slide out of a 3400RL? The underside is sealed....

No problem with the BR slide - just the other ones...
You do have to check out under your bed, though. You will need to pull that board out of there and check for your hydraulic hoses rubbing on any sharp edges...

4 1/2 inch hinges did the trick for me also. About a 30 minute job each hinge. I used outdoor, primed steel, door hinges and then sprayed them with Krylon rust inhibitor paint. Sometimes a person has to take matters into their own hands and not always rely on the Manuf. Same goes for your health. I always tell people that YOU are the only one that cares about your health, not your HMO, DR. or In company. If you want a long life, TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. Same goes for your home, be it mobile or stationary.......I guess the botom line is "DON'T RELY ON OTHERS" RELY ON YOURSELF!!!!!!!
And this advice didn't cost you anything either......

After installing hinges twice, ours has now broke again where it is hooked onto the hinge. Duct tape for now.
Happy trails...............

I bought hinges to be prepared but so far have not had to use them. Looking at the ones on mine I'm not sure they're the same as on the prior year Montanas. They look like they may hold up. It's been awhile so I need to take another look to make sure I'm not blowing smoke and don't know it, though. Anyone else compared them?

I install the hinges long time ago and it works great. When you get the hinges get galvanized one so as not to rust and freeze up. every once a while give the hinge a shot of WD 40. This has been discussed before here and as others has said Keystone just hopes it makes it so as it's out of warranty. Like Rich say we let them get by with it.

After about 13,000 miles on this trip from Texas to Alaska, we are in Nevada heading back to Texas and I fixed the second one here in Nevada. Yes, I wonder why the point on the slide out is not hinged? Seems like a much better solution. I will put on the hinges when I get back to San Antonio. For a temporary fix, I drill matching holes in the broken part and re-attach the fixed piece with large tie-down straps.

This is an obvious manufacturer's defect. Unless we owners unite and hold the manufacturer's feet to the fire they are not going to be a responsible corporate citizen. How can we as Montanna owners put together a class action warning to the manufacturer? If they don't respond in an acceptable way we can file a class action suit. We have had more than our fair share of problems with our late 2006 3400RL. The number of quality issues we have had to deal with is unacceptable. The only way this will improve is if we owners unite.

I thought this was the thread that had the picture where someone replaced the harness with something else and then used ties to attached the cables? Who did that? I need to show Ed the picture. The first time ours broke, Ed attached it back to the Monty like Tim did but that eventually broke also. Then he put a hinge on and that broke. We have it duct taped now and need to do a better fix when we get to AZ.
Happy trails.....................

Mine broke about 1 1/2 years ago. I never thought about hinges (duh!), so I drilled small holes in the plastic and used double zip ties. They have held up perfectly. Guess I got lucky.
