I did not LISTEN to SELF (landing gear bolt )

We went on our Group Thanksgiving camping trip this weekend. Boy the Turkey was good. Thursday, I told my self I needed to pick up a couple of those bolts everyone is talking about.
Hooked up to come home and something(s) were not right. The landing jack motor was sounding funny (1st Clue) then I noticed the passenger side landing gear still down and the drivers side in the nested position. HUMM. Yep the bolt closest to the motor came loose, I found the nut, and then sheared itself. I had a 1/4 inch Allen wrench that worked as a temporary fix. I put the short side in the hole and tape the long side to the square shaft so it did not flop around and both side retracted as they should. Tomorrow I will get the spare bolts. Remember to get the correct length because there is not a lot of extra clearance there.

John,
I can't begin to count the times I haven't listened to myself and regretted it. If you had bought a spare you probably wouldn't have needed it.

You've convinced me.

I know there was some criteria for the bolts - not hardened, etc. Anybody remember?

Just a cap screw with a castle nut, but has to be the correct length, I'll see if I can find it in my mumbo jumbo notes...
Can't find it, I think 1 1/4" here are pictures:

I better go out and get a couple of spares for myself. Does that cap screw have an insert for an allen wrench? Is the exact length 1 1/4" but what is the diameter?

If you blow a bolt on one side, once you replace the shear bolt how to do align both sides so they are moving exactly the same distance once again??

Thanks!

I think the shaft would be pretty much in the same place, if it breaks on the drive side. I can't find the diameter in my notes. 1/4" ??

With hydraulic legs, I don't have that problem. Also, don't have that landing leg cross shaft going across the top of that storage locker from one leg to the other restricting what I can or can't put in there.

But, yes. For that shaft, especially at the motor end, you want a 1/4-20 grade 8 bolt that will be the correct length. And if I recall, it should be 1 1/4" long

Yes the cap screw has an insert for an allen wrench and 1/4 - 20 (1 and 1/4 inches) as stated.

With the weight off the legs you can move the drivers side with the motor and the passenger side with the square shaft that spins freely. I measured the drivers side and then set the distance the same for the passenger side and replaced the bolt. Simple job once you know how.
Thanks to all for the information.
Cheers,

I am a little surprised it would call for a bolt as hard as a grade 8. I am familiar with tractor equipment and most PTO equipment calls for a softer grade 2 bolt for a shear pin application. They want the bolt to shear before it damages the drive line. But maybe those are not intended to be actual shear bolts?

I guess I'm on "borrowed time" as I've never had that happened. Translated means I better have those bolts before next trip.
Thanks for the size info.
