New Truck

Truck towed to work against a 20/25 mph headwind with no problem except not the best fuel mileage but that is to be expected. I left work early heading to the west side of the state. I drove back down river stopping at a DOT scale and weighed everything again with the new truck. Up and over the hill and then up and over the mountain pass. Truck pulled the unit quite well and the exhaust brake worked great. Hardly had to use the brakes once I set the exhaust brake onto automatic. Pulled into the campground and noticed that I had acquired a knocking sound when backing into our spot by the lake. Did some research on the 6.7 engine with a knocking sound and found a little bit of information. I think I might have an injector that is messing up. It kind of sounds like the 6.0 at idle. Just a steady knock but still quiet compared to my old 7.3. Stopped at a little Ford dealership that had no clue what it might be. I will be dropping it off at my dealer on Sunday afternoon after we get home as both dealerships seemed to think it would be fine. Some research showed a couple of bad rod bearings but more seemed to show possible injector issues. Some just added injector cleaner/lubrication and the noise went away, other did nothing and the noise went away. I drove a loop solo through the mountains at fairly slow speeds and then back to the CG on the highway. Still showed 16.8 on the trip meter and no real noticeable loss of power and the knock never really got any louder. I guess I will find out more next week after I drop it off and let them test it.

I think your truck is just fine. These new motors dont sound anything like the older diesels. if you don't have a dash light then just drive it like you stole it. If i worried every time I heard a different sound It would drive me crazy. These trucks have sensors everywhere. if something is wrong the truck will let you know. I only add cetain to my fuel when towing. Truck may not need it but when the truck is working hard than it's cheap insurance for crappy fuel.

I get cetain booster at my Ford dealer. Only used when pulling the 5er.

Badmoon I was thrilled with the mileage, up and over the mountain on forest service roads paved and gravel 3rd 4th & 5th gear and then back on 55 mph highway, very happy.

The bone, my truck was whisper quiet even outside the cab. It now has a very loud knock. I agree that they have sensors everywhere but the knocking noise I now hear is not normal.

We will pull home and see what happens. The truck is being dropped off at dealership on Sunday.

If you think you have a knock I would get it checked out before I pulled my camper. I leaking the injector can destroy your engine. Our neighbor has a Chevy that happened to. It burned a hole through one of his pistons and took out his engine. If you think you have a leaking injector I would not drive the truck. Good luck.

Just finished a 4700 mile trip in a 18 F250 with the 6.7 and 3.55 gears. Plenty of mountains, left SW Mo up to Omaha across I80 to Cheyenne across WY to Jackson Hole, up to Yellowstone and Bozeman, down to Cody across HWY 16 and Powder River Pass to Mt Rushmore, ending the trip crossing I90 to the Badlands and heading home. We grossed 24,910 lbs according to CAT scales. We traveled the interstate with cruise set on 72 mph. Average fuel mpg was 12.1. Empty the truck averages 18.3. I have seen it bump up higher on interstate trips to 20.1 but that is an exception. I am running 5-40 Rotella synthetic oil. Checked oil everyday prior to crank up and it showed no oil usage on entire trip. I used hot shot fuel additive during the mtn portion of the trip, sold at any major truck stop. I am totally satisfied with the 6.7, always had plenty of power with plenty to spare, just push down on the accelerator and it would respond on the steepest of grades. Transmission and engine braking are fantastic. I think you will be more than pleased. Can’t imagine the power you’ll have with 4:10’s. Noise level in the cab was around 66db extremely quite. I do let my truck sit and idle at least 10 min before shutting off after any towing or while taking a rest stop break, to let everything have a chance to cool off. I’ve had all the big threes diesels and none have been any better all around imho.

Curious, when you weighed on the Cat scales were you over the GVWR?

Towed back over White Pass, steep two way traffic posted at 60mph. Truck ran fine, power wise, still has the knock and is now sitting at dealership parking lot waiting to be looked at.
Truck really handles the trailer well even in the twisty parts of the pass both going up odor down. I only can compare this dually to my old SRW which isn't a completely fair comparison do the difference in age but I do like the wide hips.������

Hopefully tomorrow I will find out what the noise is and I hope that I don't get the (nothing wrong, totally in specifications line of bull). On of the guys I was camping with pulls with a few years old stock 6.7 Ford that is still whisper quiet. This does not sound like the type writer noise issue that some 6.7's and 6.6's do only at idle.
