I have a 08 6.4 with 23k, 10k of which it towing.
When I purchased the truck I overlooked the gear ratio which ended up being 354 and in my opinion too high for the speed we like to travel with the trailer in tow.
Also the truck goes into regeneration mode every 100 miles or so when towing. Average mpg is 8 with the trailer and 12 without!

The truck we posted has no performance mods. Maint is done on the Ford heavy duty use schedule and by Ford. We do have a aftermarket gage installed and we watch our EGT and boost when towing. We tow at 62/65 MPH. We do very little city or stop and go driving. Our regens are few and far between and we can not miss them as the EGT temps go up significantly when in Regen. We had two regens driving back from Florida 1200 miles and have not had another since returning in mid May.We have the 4:10 diff. We are very light of foot. Don't know why this 6.4 performs so well but it has done so since new. It is rare that we would have a truck over 3 or 4 years but this is a keeper.

No mods here as well. We do have a tuner capable of different levels of performance but only use as a display for EGT and other vital temps.
The dealer tells me that the truck can go into regen anywhere between 100 to 500 miles and that the brand of fuel used can influence it. I suppose that could be part of my problem.
Something else to consider on the 08 is extending the power train warranty in the event you do have engine trouble. I haven’t confirmed this but was told they have to raise the cab off the chassis to access the turbos which are located towards the back of the engine! Sounds like it could be very expensive.

I stand my original suggestion to the OP: If it has been tuned don't buy it
As mlh said, if it has been tuned, KNOW THE TRUCK
My contention on this is that performance modifications are done for the sole purpose of pushing the engine beyond the engineered perameters. More fuel and more air mean greater pressures and temperatures in the engine and greater torque force through the drive train.
You have no way of knowing what a previous owner 'used' his added power for.
If it is a short term ownership you want, then it may not be an issue. My belief through personal research is that a 'souped' up truck will never reach the longevity of a well maintained, stock truck

I agree with fauch that after a tuner is installed you just never know how much fun the prior owner had with it unless you can find out the full history of the truck and talk with the owner. I had a prior truck and install Banks and while I am a light foot driver, there were times that I "showed it off" to plenty of friends and relatives. That's very hard to avoid. I still don't think I was abusive but when I traded it in for my current truck the prior truck NEVER made it to the lot (rumor was the dealer/owner kept it for himself for who knows why!).
It sounds like this truck is mostly stock and while I have the 6.0, my BIL is like RichFAA and JohhnyG in that he loves the capabilities and the truck itself, andt the mpgs have pretty much sucked worse than his other 6.0. As he put it he wanted continued reliability with more power, more torque and higher tow ratings and he got all this. He tows an SOB often and this truck is way more than he needed for now he hopes to get a bigger rig and won't have to buy a new truck to do so.
Best of luck with your decision.

I have a 2008 F-250 6.4, and love it. Buy it, and drive it like you stole it...

Some of those engines have run perfectly, others have been nothing but trouble. As a famous American once said, "Well, do you feel lucky?" If you feel lucky, get it, if I was in your position, I'd opt for a Chevy D/A or a Dodge Cummins.
Good luck with your choice.

That is true with a lot of trucks but I modified mine with the sole purpose of getting rid of the DPF. The added power is nice but I don't normally use any more power than the 350 HP than it had to begin with. If we are pulling identical campers at the same speed a 350 HP truck and a 600 HP truck will be generating the same HP, just enough to maintain the set speed.

I know the 6.4 has the reputation of poor MPG..However.. we are towing a GCVW of @23,000 lbs and get a solid 10mpg on any given day actually more like 10.3 to 10.7. I do not think that is bad at all.. The lighter trucks do better and the newer trucks do better. This truck is strong.. I use it to pull stumps.

Like others here our 08 350 is stock, other than the air bags I added two months ago, and except for some fairly minor stuff it has performed well for the last 3 1/2 years. We are currently 6000 miles and 6 weeks into an around the country 4 month tour. We are getting over 10 on average and the truck feels stronger now than it did a month ago! Just past 45K last week. Love the pulling, love the handling, love the comfort of the King Ranch...it don't get no better than this!

To be honest he didn't offer and I didn't ask. Although when I tried to talk down the price the salesman said they had to put a lot of money into the truck. That was all I needed to hear. I'll keep looking.

JMHO of course, but I don't think any of these diesels need any kind of help in the way of performance enhancers. They do just fine as is.

I am hestitant to say this since I have no personal experience with the 6.4, but if you can hold off and look for a low milage 6.7, as I read the diesel forums, the 6.7 is superior to, and ford has engineered into the 6.7 engine, solutions to the issues assocated with the 6.4 primarily regeneration. I have talked to a couple of folks who have owned both and theyn stress the 6.7 is an improvement over the 6.4 to include regeneration, power, and MPG.

THe 6.7 is not just a good engine it's a great engine. The only thing it lacks is a 9th injector like Chevy has.

As indicated earlier, we have had superduties with the 7.3, 6.0 and now the 6.7. We also love the 6.7

i do agree that the 6.7 is a big improvement over the 6.4L however the 6.4 if that is what you can afford is a very good motor. We drove a 6.7 and the difference was very noticeable.
