Redwood Coast to Portland

We are going to be heading up to Portland and wondering what the best route would be. I know we can cut across the 199 thru Grants Pass to the 5 but that road looks a little curvy. Should we go all the way up the coast and cut over? Thinking we will take about 3 days to make the trip and take it easy. Thanks
