Radar in the truck
For two days we were traveling thru areas with 80%+ chances of rain. Looking at the radar on Accuweather on my ipad before we started out it occurred to me that, since the ipad uses Verizon and we have plenty of gigs, I could use it in the truck on the road. Was really nice to know when was a good time to stop for lunch and get off the road and when was a good time to go on as well as just what we were facing up ahead.

Really comes in handy. The DW is typically reading a book, checking e-mail, or one of her favorite web sites on her ipad while I am driving. So if there are storms around I have her check radar occasionally to see what is ahead. Would rather not drive head on into a bad storm.

I use MyRadar app. I would not be without it. Even with about a 5 minute delay in their reporting, I can frequently tell Al we will hit light rain in about 10 minutes.
We use it at home all the time as well. When we were evacuated at horse camp in June we used it to monitor the situation.
I mean, I LOVE that app!

I need to find an app for the forest fires in Washington and Oregon as we will be heading that way in a couple of weeks. Any suggestions? Jim

Jim all I can say is that it seems like the whole place is burning. Five out of six days last week you could not see the sun or half of the hills around our home. That is with no real fires around us. Just little fires here locally. Lots of our fire fighters are loaned out to areas where they are really needed. Probably anywhere from fifty to sixty miles to any of the closer ones. It has been a bad year and we just lost three fire fighters on up north on Thursday I think in an auto accident. Wa, Or, and Idaho all have major fires going right now. To dry and no thinning or logging of the Forrest's has just made it almost impossible to fight the fires.
Just follow the news and you will be able to hopefully stay out of harms way.

This is a link to live Twitter updates from the involved county Emergency Management organizations on the fires here in Washington. It will keep you updated on road and area closures. If you are going to eastern Washington the only area not on fire right now is the SE part. Most of western Washington is ok...right now anyhow. http://www.king5.com/story/news/loca...ates/32041557/

Thanks for those sites. Still three weeks before we head that way. They will be helpful. Jim

The Rand McNally (Good Sam) GPS has the ability to overlay the radar on the map, it uses a link to your cell phone.

I'm with you Dick on checking the weather radar apps while traveling with Montana. A couple years ago while out west we knew there would be strong storms in the area. We kept checking the radar while driving and found we would be heading into a huge storm with high winds and plenty of RED on radar. We had plenty of time to find just the right underpass (under the interstate) to take a break at the storms edge. Within 15 minutes of parking under there the storm hit with high winds and large hail.

An excellent idea! I just downloaded the MyRadar app and will get familiar with it before our next outing. Thanks Carol!
