Tom S.,
I don't disagree with your statement, as I didn't check to see if they were torqued to at least 45 before I started, but I would think that at least all of them would have been close to the same torque and it was very obvious they were not. Nevertheless, it has been added to my maintenance checklist.

Yes, unless you have had the trailer's suspension changed to independent suspension, it has u-bolts.

Some of mine were actually lose and in the 5 to 10 ft lbs range and not one that would dial even close to 45 ft lbs. At the factory they are likely using air wrenches set to a torque limit, so if air pressure changes, pneumatic wrench wears; the torque values change. Remember that a 1/2 inch u-bolt is pretty light even compared to a 3/4 ton truck's u-bolts ( these are torqued at 150 plus ft lbs). All automotive inclusive of nuts must be of grade 8 or better. These on our Montys are only grade 5 and the nuts are likely grade 3 or better. If they are not torqued properly at the factory there will be a time when the u-bolt will find its place around that axle and loosen up because of tensile stretch. These axles and suspension systems are operating at max load 100% of the time while sitting or moving down the road.

This is a good post. I checked my U-bolts yesterday and found only two nuts at spec. Needless to say they all meet specs now. Thanks guys.

Once more this forum saves the day! Had the Montana in for a warrenty issue and decided to have the U-bolts holding the axles on checked. You guessed it. All 16 nuts were loose. Mechanic said some were only a little over "hand tight".
Tightened nuts and axles alignment checked. Now all is correct. Wonder what they do at the factory with those torque wrenches?
Anyway it sure pulled better taking it home.
Thanks again everyone, I would have overlooked this if not for you.

You are all very welcome, however as I stated in the first post in this thread I believe the thanks should go to Richfaa as he had to pay the price for this problem. Keep checking those U-bolts... Dave

Checked mine today, t/w set at 62fp, all were tight. Talked to my neighbor at seasonal site who has Keystone Laredo F/W. He's a machinist, and says if they were torqued right at factory, they should never come loose due to the constant tension on them, execpt under extreme circumstances. Poor quality control. Thanks for the heads up. Also inspected my Tacoma made in USA tires, mfg 46 week of 04 and still excellent condition. Shackles ok also. Maybe I better hang on to my 05 Mountaineer f/W.

We'll be driving to Goshen, straight from the dealer. Maybe I'll ask the tech to check the U-bolts. See you in Goshen!

The Mor Ryde IS system is in and on the road. What a difference. They also built a sturdy 2 inch rear hitch fot us. Great bunch of folks. Several MOC'ers are having the wet bolt kit installed. These rallies can be expensive.....

Rich, I'm sure you will enjoy that IS system over the years. We are looking forward to them checking ours over on the 14th of October. I think I will have them do a rear hitch for us also. Maybe even a TV mount for the basement or bedroom......
Phil
Please say hi to all at the rally for us, we really do wish we could have made it this year. We will be there in Heart and Spirit!!!!!

IS = independent suspension..see the Mor Ryde web site for information. Yes ` higher priced brands like Carriage"Royals" use the IS system OEM.

Rich, Thanks for that info. I will take a look at mor ryde and see about it.
Curious question, how long did it take for mor ryde to install the IS on your unit?

Just wanted to throw this out there, when checking the torque values on your U-bolts you need to be very careful. If you are using a torque wrench that hasn't been calibrated in awhile then you don't really know what value you are torquing to and you stand the risk of over-torquing the bolt, if that happens the potential for damage is far greater than an under-torqued bolt. I'm not sure about what the manufacturers QA/QC checks the torque values at, but I know in the wind industry we frequently only perform checks at 50%-75% of the actual torque value (i.e. 30-45ft-lbs in this case). Just felt that was worth mentioning... a snapped/sheared U-bolt could be disastrous.
