More Great Advice

in a week we will be moving to the Boston area and will be staying at the Boston Minuteman CG in Littleton MA. We know there is a lot to see and do there but would like some advice so we can start planning our stay. Obviously baked beans are on the list, but where to go to get the best????

Everyone was very helpful during our stay in New York and hope we can get the same advice for here.

Thanks is advance....

Phil & Cathy

You will enjoy New England.
Did you check into staying at Hanscom AFB FamCamp?

JimF is there now.

To me, everything is close up that-a-way.

Do go to Durgin Park while you are there and have some very good food.

Wayne, Unfortunately the MWR book says "No advance reservations" for Hanscom. We didn't want to go up there without reservations and get the shaft so we had to book at Minuteman....We will call Hanscom on our way to check on availability and possibly stay there after all. I just got off the phone with the lady at the park and she says she can always "Find Room" for us. She sounded positive but one never knows until you get there.

Thanks for the good advice Wayne.

Out near Hyannis Port there is a boat tour that shows you the Kennedy compound. We didn't take the tour but did note it is available.

The Minuteman National Park is close to the Minuteman RV Park. We stayed there one year.

For some ideas, if you want to peruse our website, the relevant postcards are at
www.geocities.com/stevereigle
then in the 2007 postcards, scroll to November 11 - these things we saw when at Minuteman.
and in the 2009 postcards, scroll to February 12.
These are the dates of the postcards. We were there earlier in Fall 2007 and in Fall 2008 but didn't get the postcards done until the dates I listed.

We visited Boston last year (stayed at Hanscom). Boston Commons was pretty neat, and stopped nearby at Cheers (originally the Bull & Finch IIRC that inspired the TV series) for an adult beverage. Fileen's (sp?) Basement is a block or two from the Commons for the DW to shop, It's across the street from the building that Boston Legal used for their office exterior shots, easily recognizable. The Samuel Adams Brewery tour was also very enjoyable, whether you're a fan of that particular nectar or not.

Enjoy!

Waynem, JimF, I sent you a PM. Jan how was Hanscom Fam Camp? Were you able to get Sat TV or do they have cable? How was traffic there? What time of year did you go? Any trouble getting a site? I am travelling with my Retired Navy BIL and my sister so we would be looking for two sites. Any help appreciated. Thanks

Phil, we just stayed at that campground last month. We took the train into Boston from the Quincy station right to the Boston Common. There is a very good guided walking tour booked through the visitor's center at the Common and several different trolley tours, also booked through the visitor's center. On the trolley tours you can get off and on at any of their stops to enjoy a particular area more. We also drove over to Lowell, MA and toured the mills with a National Park ranger and went through the Textile Museum. Both very interesting. You will also be close to the Minuteman National Historic site, which is worth a visit.

Pam, Sorry, which CG were you referring to and can you comment on it further?

Thanks, Phil

We were satisfied there. Sites were decent size, but not shaded - not so good on hot days, but should be good for satellite (we don't use sat). Plenty of over-air TV there. We were there in early October, called ahead the day we were enroute, but had a couple of CGs picked out as back-ups. The FamCamp is NOT in the contonement area, but on the other side of the runway, through a residential area. If you have pets with you, be SURE to have a coppy of their immunization records - you will be asked for them.
Traffic was not bad except in Boston itself.

Phil, it was the Boston Minuteman Campground in Littleton. It is in a woodsy setting, the roads are a little snug, but overall it is a decent campground with nice folks. I made a mistake about taking the train from this campground area; it was really from the Wompatuck State Park. We tried to take the train into Boston on the 4th of July, but it was a nightmare at the station, so we went to the Minuteman Historial site instead.

Phil,
Hanscom is a farly busy FAMCAMP this time of year. I had forgotten that they do not take reservations. When you call to see if there is availability, make sure to ask if it has any hook-ups. It is my understanding that they have some electric/water only, and maybe not even that - don't know for sure, so ask.

Also, consider taking in the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard. Quite a history on how it came about and it consists of every tree from around the world that will grow in that area. At least that is what I heard. Just something to do in your "off" time.

I guess when we leave NYC area I should call the fam camp to check availability and what kind of sites they have. We will keep our reservations at the Minuteman until we decide where to go for sure......Thanks everyone for your valuable advice....

Phil,
Your a member of 1000 trails? There are 3 TT's in Mass. Have you check to see if they fit your travel needs?

Wayne, I dont't find any 1000 trails in MA, you may be thinking of Outdoor World which is actually a seperate operation. It would have cost me an additional $2,000 to join these parks......

Yep! I see where two are Outdoor World, but one is ELS Properties, whatever that means.
If TT members cant use them why are they advertised on TT Web site? Go figure.
