Hi gang

Rick and pan here,
We are from central NY, currently in Texas. Wondering if any of you know how much of a wind gust it takes to flip a 39' 5th wheel?

First, welcome to the forum!
We have home bases in Kansas and New Mexico and 50-60 mph wind gusts aren't that unusual. When we know winds or storms are expected I close the valves and let the tanks fill up and always keep the fresh tank full, that adds a lot of weight to the lower part of the rig. We were hit broadside by a wind gust that the weather service said was up to 90mph. The rig weathered it better than we did ,but other than a slide getting pushed in at the top a few inches, nothing really happened.

You must be referring to tomorrow's expected winds - 40-50 mph (Dec 13, 2018). Depending on where you are sitting you should be fine, unless you are sitting on top of a hill with nothing to protect the 5er. Will you be driving? Sitting still? Parked between other RVs?

We're currently in the Texas hill country, up on top of the hill. There is a ranch house to the west side of us. It offers a bit of protection, but not a lot.

40mph winds currently here in NM now and no issues. Supposed to get 55-60 mph gusts after 1am. You should have no problems until you try to walk around outside.

Welcome to the forum from Arizona. We spend a good part of the summer on a mountain at 6500 feet. We get storms with winds sometimes above 50 mph. Shakes the rig but that is about all.

During Erma, we moved our monty out of our park in Naples to escape the possible storm surge. There were over 50, 5th wheels that had to endure the wrath of 150 MPH winds and not one ended up with any damage even though many cottages were blown away. We ended up in Sebring Florida for the storm and ours hooked to the truck had to go through 120 mph winds and no problems. I think you will be fine.

High winds

I am in Central TX and we are supposed to get some strong winds this afternoon and tonight - so I started googling to see if there was any information on how much is too much. Here is one interesting article...

https://campaddict.com/can-high-wind...-over-your-rv/

If you click on the article referenced by campaddict.com, it includes a 1995 study with the highlighted info below...
5.5 m (18' travel trailer which I assume weighs 3500 to 4000 lbs) - 53 mph tipped it over. The semi he references weighing 19,600 kg = 30,000 lbs...wind speed of 101 mph.

The study that was done about affects of tornadic winds (F1, F2, F3 etc) on vehicles. The summary of that article is below...
I don't know if anybody has done wind tunnel testing for a 12-13,000 lbs Montana. My takeaway is that I plan to use 75 mph wind for the base line of when I plan to panic and get the hell out of Dodge. Where should I go when I leave Dodge?

We are just outside Johnson City, Texas
You will be fine. Just be sure not to leave anything loose outside. Oh, we are also expecting thunder-snow tonight.

That's the first question we ask when we check in to a new campground.

I live in Amarillo TX and we had wind gust up to 55 mph today. My 3560RL is sitting in the Drive way with levelers all down and broadside to the wind. I wasn't in it but was concerned enough to keep and eye on it and I never seen it even bobble.
Sure wouldn't want to drive in those conditions.

States usually close roads when wind can be a hazard to trucks and high profile vehicles. Here in Reno, our N/S (395/580) freeway usually closes to anything over 9 feet tall in summer afternoons due to winds. Heed they warnings/advisories.

We frequently travel to/ from west Texas. Our general rule is not to move if we don't see many - a normal number of big rigs on the road. We've been parked on a hilltop in southwestern OK in wind gusts 50 - 60 mph or more. It rocked us to sleep but everything was good in the morning. Enjoy!

Sounds like a lot of us have had experience with high winds. I consider a broadside wind gust while towing to be the greatest risk. That same gust might not be an issue if parked with jacks in place. I don't worry too much about head winds or tail winds other than having a huge window in the back of my Monty. I've seen that entire window - glass and metal frame included - flex inward about 3/4" when we were being beat up by a tail wind while sitting unprotected in an RV park. I wrote to Trailer Life about this once, and others have done so too. Their response is that there are too many variables to be able to state a value. My personal experience is my rig stayed on the road with 40 mph cross winds.

Hi neighbor, we are from Fremont, N Y. Now in Raymondville, TX for the winter. We do not worry. about the winds. Driving would be of some concern if heavy winds were predicted.
Stop in Gateway RV Park here in Raymondville, TX if you get down in South Texas, or next summer in Fremont.

Windgusts

As many have stated, parked 5ers will take almost any winds with the slides out. Towed 5ers get a bit dicey going east to west or vice versos with some of the big winds. We have been moved across lanes on I-40 in 50 mph winds taking the truck and Montana into the next lane south. In California, they post warnings when high winds start flipping semi trailers.
