5th wheel latch kit
Based on the recommendations here I bought and installed the butch's services latch kit for $50. Here's what it looks like on: http://s1221.photobucket.com/albums/...k/Bed%20Saver/
My head had pointy ends on it so I had to pull the middle pins as Butch suggested, but it really wasn't hard to install and if it works is a cheap option to those others out there.

Looks good ... it will serve the same function (keep the pinbox on the unlatched hitch) as the competitor and save you a couple of hundred to boot.

How many people have actually seen a fully locked 5th wheel unexpectedly open? I am running an 18K Pullrite SuperGlide, and there’s no mistaking when it locks shut.

Happened to me on the way to the rally last fall. Was helping a neighbor of my sisters move a Jayco from one side of his barn to the other. I put the trailer where he wanted it. Was helping him with the landing gear legs when I got grease on my hands and had good clothes on. Walked into the barn to wipe my hands on a rag and he pulled my release without having the pins in the legs (just let them hit the ground) or chocks behind the wheels. Dropped that sucker right on my new truck. Luckily the Jayco wasn't my Monty. I have a really tiny dent on one side of my bed rails and white paint embedded in my plastic. The Jayco didn't come out as well, but it made a believer out of me. Things can happen and we all do dumb things from time to time. For $50 I'm for better safe than sorry.

Mine was easy to install, takes a second to engage/disengage, and it gives peace of mind.

The old way of installing was a little more difficult for the type of hitches that Dick and I have. After my install I believe Butch went to a self tapping screw which would have made it a real piece of cake, Right Dick????
