50 Amp thermal overload
Good morning,
Has anyone had issues with burning out these 50 amp overload relays? Theses are located in the front compartment connected to the batteries and the line going back to the distribution panel. I was told that when your batteries are low and they are charging in excess, it’s a possibility of burning theses overload out. But I have two new Interstate marine deep cycle batteries.
I also considered operating the slides putting a strain on the batteries and this relay when boon docking. So I greased the rails ect to reduce friction.
Well, I burnt up two of these in the last three weeks. I can almost justify first one and the lousy batteries in had, but now with the new batteries , greased rails, any suggestions on further causes?

Hi
I think you are referring to the auto reset circuit breakers in the DC system.
The answer is yes.
It’s not the high charge rate that causes the problem it the use or attempts to use the high amperage draw system when the batter is partially discharged.
The low voltage causes the appliance like your hydraulic pump to draw more amps than normal and commonly trips that circuit breaker.
Each time a circuit breaker trips the bimetal spring inside weakens and will eventually cause the breaker to trip at smaller load.
They are not expensive and you can commonly purchase them at an auto parts store.

Many of us have replaced those 50 amp auto reset circuit breakers with 80 amp ones (or in my case two 40’s wired in parallel). Keystone endorsed the mod.

Under a heavy load the Hydraulic Pump can draw near 80 amps, thus many members have changed to an 80 breaker. Montana is not alone with this problem as we had an SOB that had the same issue with an under sized auto reset breaker.

Instead of using grease, you may want to use spray on slide lube so as not to retain dirt and debris. Walmart carries it in the RV section.

I will install a 80 amp auto reset circuit breaker. I believe that should more than cover the amperage draw.

I installed the bussman 80 amp manual reset model cb 185-80. You can buy this for 17.62 at ryderfleetproducts.com or 855-885-5631. I believe this is the cheapest on the internet.Good luck.

Have the original, but mine did trip once when I operated it without being hooked to the pedistal in a park.

I replaced slow-blow 50 with a slow-blow 100 amp
My 2015 came with a 50-amp slow-blow fuse that tripped frequently during hydraulic slide actuation. Got worse over time (since thermal properties worsen after repeated tripping). Had it replaced under warranty, but problem started again soon after. I called Lippert, the makers of the hydraulic slide/leveler and pump system. Tech guy told me these identical systems installed on more expensive motorhomes are installed with 100-amp slow-blow fuses. He said he can't technically recommend that because the RV manufacturer is the one who installs the fuse....and the wiring. I measured as high as 80 amps during slide afctuation, and determined my wiring sufficient to accept up to 100 amps. I purchased and installed a 100 amp fuse. No issues since.

Just my thoughts and operation advise on hydraulic sides and leveling systems … as attested to, the hydraulic pump can draw a fair amount of amps at normal operation. I've seen some operate their slides and landing gear with "determination" as in continuing to lay on the switch well past the time the slides or landing gear has stopped movement. There is no need to do this as all it does it cause the pump to draw even more amps. Once the slides are in or gear is up, I immediately let up on the switch as holding it in for another 5-10 seconds is useless. You can readily hear the pump start to strain once movement has stopped.

When I looked up the specifications on the pump in our Montana the normal draw was 50 amps Locked rotor was 80 amps. Locked rotor is a failed condition.
What I found in the specs was something none of us are doing. The pump and motor has a duty cycle limitation.
15 minuets cool down period between pump operations.
I checked further and the operations of the pump against the pressure relief valve doesn’t bring the motor draw up much at all but the bypass arrangement in the pump will cause a hydraulic oil over heat very quickly. I would think this duty cycle is more for pump assembly cooling than just the motor cooling.
While I do advocate running the slides out until they reach their limit and you hear the pump noise change in order to make sure your slides are all the way out and the pressure relief valve is working I don’t recommend holding the switch any longer.
I do recommend the 15 minuet cooling period between operations.
