Campground recommendations Gettysburg DC area

In September we will be visiting the Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area. (Gettysburg to Charlottesville) We will also be visiting the DC area. I don't mind a 50 mile commute to various sites if it means not moving the 5'er every few days. Based on this citeria, we welcome any campground suggestions on this journey as we have very little knowledge of the area. Thanks, Jim & Linda

Passport America members like the Artillery Ridge camp grounds in Gettysburg. There is also the Gettysburg campgrounds where we had the 08 NE Rally.
There is a good camp ground just north of DC in College Park called Cherry Hill Campground that has a shuttle to the metro for DC runs.

Hope this helps.

We second all of John's recommendations. In fact, we stayed at them all this past spring.

We have stayed at all of the campgrounds in the immediate Gettysburg area except the KOA. We prefer Artillery Ridge. We will be there again September 9,10, and 11.

In the DC area we spent a few nights at the KOA between DC and Baltimore a few years back when our youngest first started working for the Secret Service. It was nicely done and had shuttle service to the Metro station for easy access to downtown DC.

Stayed at Artillery Ridge CG. It is about 3/4 of a mile to the entrance of the Gettysburg Welcome Center. They also have a free Diorama for anyone staying in their CG. The Diorama is worth watching no matter where you stay, and then take the Gettysburg tour. We took the self Auto Tour and enjoy the fact that we could stop where we wanted and spend as much time as we wanted.

Gettysburg is quite an educational experience.

FMI The diorama is no longer at Artillery Ridge. It has been moved to the Gettysburg History Center and has been much improved. It was really good to start with but is better now. IF you stay at Artillery ridge they will give you a coupon to get into see it for free. If you have never been to Gettysburg it is an excellent way to get oriented before you do anything else.

We were in Gettysburg 19-24 June. We stayed at Artillery Ridge Camground (our favorite). We used our lodging receipt to get into the diorama and we like the new setup.

Cherry Hill is fabulous @ College Park Md. A metro Bus comes right to the Park & takes you to the Metro Rail about 15 minutes away. Get a day pass to ride all day on the Metro Rail cause it goes to all the major attractions. It is easy to use & very convenient.

We went there a couple of years ago & will go back again. They don't rip you off on their prices for food & drink either.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. They are most helpful. As our schedule becomes more clear we will book Cherry Hill and Artillery Ridge.

In Gettysburg we stayed twice at Artillery Ridge. Would do so again. Also stayed another time at Round Top CG. Would do that again, too. There's also Drummer Boy but it caters to wee ones and we prefer to avoid the noise. Otherwise it's a nice park. Haven't been to Gettysburg CG so cannot comment on that one.

Our favorite place in the D.C. area (have grandkids there) is now covered with condos. We're still looking for a good place there where we could stay for a month with full hookups, etc, at a reasonable price. Cherry Hill is very proud of their park although it's supposed to be very nice. There is a nice state or county campground in the Manassas, VA area but I think you're limited to two weeks, if I recall. Can't remember whether they have sewer hookups. I think it's Bull Run Regional Park but am not positive.

Also, suggest you look around Frederick and Leestown in MD. I don't recall what rv parks are available but they'd be a bit more central for you. There are tons and tons of places to see in that whole general area. Have fun!

Jim and Linda, you probably have lots and lots places lined up to see but if you need more, email me and I'll point you to the relevant pages on our website.

Meanwhile, we'll be in your area in a little over two months. Let's get together for lunch and I'll get my blocks from you. Email me what kind of beer you like and we'll do a little exchange.
