screen door mod

was wondering if anyone has added lexlan or another plastic to there screen door and how did you attach it. was thinking of adding it to the screen door, so we could leave the main door open and still have light but not let out to much a/c. also will help prevent the dogs from going thru the screen also. thanks in advance.

I didn't do it myself, I just took it to a glass shop and had them put in tinted lexan. Didn't cost that much and has lasted four years so far.

We have considered but fear our dogs would scratch it up.

The lexan is a great idea. This past summer I saw a fifth wheel and could not figure out what was different about this trailer. I finally figured it out, he had taken the screen out and put in white screen material(I use it for seat bottoms on boat cushions). With the white material you can see out but not in during daylight hours and you cannot see in very well when its dark outside and lights are on inside.

We did the conversion at the Fall Rally this year! We took the Lexan and cut it to fit into the groove in both the top and bottom sections of the screen door. We used the thicker Lexan and don't need any screen door gasket to put in the groove to make it tight. We also put a small piece into the area in the middle of the door where the sliding section is that you move to open the door when the front door is closed. We had to take out the middle brace piece to put the small piece it but it was no problem. Fitting it into the extra grooves of the screen door is perfect and you cut the Lexan a little bit larger than the opening so it will stay in the groove. You flex it just a small amount to get it to fit into the grooves but aside from that it works perfect. Some have used mirror clips to hold theirs in but I am going to try and use some dots of clear silicone to hold ours in at the bottom. That way I do not have to put more holes in the metal of the screen door. I'll let everyone know how that idea works. It is surprising also how much quieter it is in the unit from outside noises when you have the door open and the Lexan in place in the screen door.

1retired06-- I have a grid that I purchased at Camping World that is adjustable to fit the bottom of the door and it keeps anyone/anything(children and pets included) from messing up the bottom section of the lexlan and scratching it. So if you get one of those you might be safe.

We did similar to Rondo and others, but our Lexan's thickness needed the a small amount of gasket so we used an old telephone extension line (two wire type and white color) to snug it.
Based on advice from HOOK (Larry Sessoms) we took our door to a glass shop and for $97 they cut the Lexan both top and bottom to fit based on my instructions where we can occasionally pop out the Lexan to clean. We now have plenty of daylight while using air conditioning.

Did the same but i put screen clips in the groove then drilled a hole through the outer aluminum rim then put the thumb screw through the rim to the clip and it holds the window in.

Here is a link, and a "how to" from another site. I am going to do this myself.

Bought clear replacement slide at CW the non-slide part was too small so I went to Hobby Lobby (DW's version of CW)and got a piece of Plexiglas (like used in picture frames)and cut it to fit that side. Lowes cut plexiglas to my measurements for the lower part of the door and cut the top piece except for the radiused top corners which I trimmed to fit with a coping saw fine blade. Did not remove screens, just placed plexiglas inside the offset and held in place with small mirror mounts reversed so the thick end fits inside the offset.Drill holes in the mounts first then use as guide to drill holes in frame, careful not to go all the way through.#6 x 1/2"SS sheet metal screws. Also added another handle lower down on the outside and attached to upper handle with a 3/4"strip of plexiglas to enable opening from the ground. Also added one through a slot cut in bottom of the slider and attached to the top handle to open from inside without opening the slide part. Can remove or replace plexiglas in 5 or 10 minutes to allow breeze when weather is right. Cost about $35. 2 Hours. Do not need strength and plexiglas is a lot cheaper than lexan.

I did this mod to our 2012 last year.
Lexan is more cost but is a better choice.
i got it at Lowes. they cut to my specified size(s) which for me was the rectangle of the lower section and the general rectangle (hight and width) of the upper section. The radius of the upper section corners is approximately the size of a 1 gallon paint can lid. i used one to trace a curve and then cut it with a dremel tool bit (go slow enough so as not to melt the plastic)
We left the screens in place and put the lexan in the inside groove and used velcro at the cross bars to hold in place. top section just held at bottom.
Bottom section held at top and bottom. The top section is a tight fit and we generally leave that in place. The bottom section is easy to remove and store, so we remove that one when fresh air is desired.
Ours is clear but i can see where smoked would look nice. We did'nt do the mid section.
There is so much more light. Very worth doing.
