Air Flow over Tailgate
Here is a test to show the air flow with and without the tail gate up. Just an interesting video.

Always suspected this, but never would comment, because if someone spends the money to buy those net tailgates they will vigorously defend them and the perceived increase in fuel mileage.

I just wanted a V tailgate that would accept my backup camera. It came with slots, but that wasn't something I wanted. For years out here in the farm country there is always someone driving around with the tailgate down. I could see some direct benefits, but most of those were for the auto body folks and the parts dealers when they forgot it was down and backed into something.

Didn't Mythbusters determine there was no difference in fuel usage?

I think they determined fuel mileage was slightly better with the stock tailgate and in the up position.

I've only read a handful of tests in all these years but every one of them showed no improvement with anything but the stock tailgate and in the up position. Makes sense, with the mfrs having to meet cafe standards. If a different tailgate got better mpg, they'd already be using it.
On past trucks I got the V-gate for fifthwheels, for the convenience, not for mileage. With this truck I've not bothered. By the way, turned 100,000 miles on this truck today.

I think, when we stick a 13' tall box over the bed, all bets on aerodynamic are off . Net, V notch gate, stock tailgate........ But I do like louvered because I can see thru it. Dick, were (what brand) did you find one that adapted the stock camera mount. Been looking for one or going to have to modify one.
