Need to know.........
........how the A/C and furnace work. So all you HVAC guys educate me. If I understand, the return air for the A/C is in the ceiling just under the unit on the roof. But the return air for the furnace is the slotted face of the stairs to the bedroom. That whole area under the stairs and around to the convenience center is the return plenum and the back side of that area is the shroud covering the convenience center in the basement. Is this correct?

You got it, cowboy.
The rooftop unit is just a glorified, a-bit-changed-around window A/C unit, ducted.

Thanks Ozz,
So if the furnace return air plenum is as I stated, then the air on the piping in back of the convenience center is probably close to whatever temperature the inside is, right?

Yep...in my rig furnace is under the fridge and backside is the outside wall...not much better. If you find any leakage to your basement then your pulling in cold air.

Stiles, I assume you are thinking cold weather? I have mounted the sending unit of an indoor/outdoor thermometer (from Target) on the wall on the connection side of the connection center wall. We'll be in some cold weather this coming winter and I want to monitor those temperatures. When I did this temporarily in the past it stayed above freezing in there but that was a somewhat short test and I'll feel better being able to see the numbers while sitting inside in comfort.
