Anyone pull a tag trailer?
Looking to upgrade the hitch on our 3400 to be able to pull a tag trailer. Has anyone done this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know about the newer Montanas, but I was told to not even think about trying to pull something with our 07 3400RL.

Have installed a hitch on all 3 of my Montanas starting with my 2000 to pull small boats and jetskis. Dump the make believe hitch you have entirely and have a good one welded up for you. Mine is bolted to the frame with six 1/2" bolts You'll not get much positive response to this topic on the MOC as full timers mostly chime in on this one. The vertical post and brace is a bicycle rack welded to my hitch.

I was told the weak frame was the problem.

We've cussed and discussed this for several years on the MOC. I've always posted my particular positive experiences on 3 different Montana models. In fact I firmly believe my hitch braces the frame better than the weiny cross braces on the standard frame. The 2000 had the weakest frame of all since it really wasn't an I Beam, but 3 pieces of steel stitch welded together to make what resembled an I Beam. Thousands of people in the Midwest double tow behind anything from say a KZ product on thru Jayco's to say a Montana. I frequent several RV websites and I don't recall an instance where a frame issue or traffic accident was directly attributed to double towing. I will say if you do double tow ... use a professionally welded custom hitch and don't concoct some insane setup.

Nice looking hitch, dieselguy! Kudos to you. I saw a good one pull into harvest moon in adairsville, ga yesterday. 35 foot or so keystone fifthwheel, but can't remember brand. What caught my eye was a three wheeled motorcycle on a platform behind it using the hitch. First thought...no way standard hitch. Second thought...no pin weight. Then underneath the rear of the fifthwheel I see an axle and two wheels. Weird looking, but guess they really wanted that motorcycle back there. John

Thanks dieselguy. My trailer is a 5x10 primarily to pull my motorcycle on when we go on longer trips. I don't plan on trying to pack the S&B in a 20' box back there. Fully replacing what is already there was my thoughts, but wanted to get a few others opinions. Now about my tires...LOL Just kidding!!!!!!!!!

Although we do not pull a trailer we wanted more storage space so I designed and added a aluminum diamond plate box on the rear. It is mounted to the bottom flange of the 10" I beams with thru bolts at 6" on center with aluminum structural I beam extending back 36". The aluminum I beam is then reinforced with a structural aluminum channel.
Ths same company that built our box on the back of the truck built this one, www.truck-tool-box.com
They will custom built anything.
I have calculated to carry no more than 1,000 lbs in the box.
Here are some pics of the box....I will get some better ones of the anchorage of the I beams.

If you keep your tongue weight down as much as you can where is it going to hurt the frame? Your PULLING against the metal frame with your load divided evenly. The main concern I had was the torc side to side. Put in a good cross brace and you are good to go. The water tank is right there and it holds 60+ gallons at 8.35 lbs each. 500# of bounce back there. Carry minimum water.
