Surge Guard buzzing

I just plugged in my Surge Guard 34750 to my dedicated 50 amp plug at my stick house so that we can start to load it for our next trip. After a few seconds it has started to make a loud buzzing sound. No warning lights on the unit-power to the coach seems fine. Does this likely mean the unit is fried?

I see no one else has replied so I will give it a go as a 40+ year electrician. Without your rig connected there is no good reason for a Surge protection device to buzz. I recommend you unplug and check your home wiring out first with a quality multi-meter. If you are unsure of any of your readings feel free to run them by me. A few things to check voltage. ground to L1 and ground to L2. With no load these should be the same. Ground to neutral, if anything other than zero you have more testing to do. Good luck Benny

I had the same problem . Had been in extremely heavy rainstorm, and water got in the box. Had to break open the box to see it had water inside. Before I did anything I called Surgeguard who said "sorry, out of warranty" I bought a Progressive EMS which has a lifetime warranty. Surgeguard had no technical support option, and said the buzzing sound meant the unit was no longer functional.

Shortly after I posted this the buzzing stopped, but it also blew the breaker, so I assume it's dead. Leaving at 0-dark-thirty Monday morning and CW about 60 miles from me is the only source, so that's what I will do. I am not comfortable traveling without one. Thanks for the replies and advice.

As hunts800 pointed out to you make sure you buy a Progressive Industries EMS that has lifetime protection. Surge Guard does not.

Sounds like you're in between a rock and a hard place. If Surge Guard is your only option then some protection is better than none. You will want to get a Progressive Industries EMS ASAP as the Surge Guard has proven itself substandard with no support.

Good to know. Where is the best place to buy one? I had no choice but to buy the Surge Guard today-the folks at my nearest CW said that is the one that they recommend and sell the most of.

Forgot to ask-which model do you all recommend? Progressive Industries makes at least 3 or more 50 amp models. Is it worth having someone hard wire one in the rig or do most of you use the "portable" ones? TIA

My old Surgeguard 34750 pooped out on me on the way to the Rally in Goshen last month so I bought the Progressive Industries PT50X - 50 amp EMS from the Representative who gave the seminar at the Rally. Probably could have save a few bucks if bought elsewhere but if he does not make some money he won't come back. Besides, I needed one! Oh, the warranty does not cover repair or shipping.

I have had the HW50C since my rig was new (2010). I wired it myself as I'm an electrician (among other skills). I like the hardwired version since you can't leave it attached to the pedestal and drive off or forget to attach it when you are busy setting up. I also got the remote display so that I don't have to go outside to read status or fault codes. Excellent 1st mod.
